Best Time for Whale Watching in Maui

When humpback whales are around Maui, which months are best, when the season starts and ends, which tours run each month and how to time your trip.

Updated October 2026

The best time for whale watching in Maui is January to March, the peak of a humpback season that runs roughly November to May. Whales are scarce at both ends of that window, most whale-watch listings run from mid-December to mid-April, and February is usually the strongest single month. If your dates are fixed, pick the boat to suit the month: the Maui whale watching cruises we compare each publish their own season, and the month you travel decides which of them are running at all.

Maui humpback season timeline: whales roughly November to May, peak January to March

The short answer: January to March

NOAA’s Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary says the season “generally runs from November through May” and that the usual peak “occurs from January through March”. Hawaiʻi is the main winter breeding ground for North Pacific humpbacks: they mate, give birth and nurse calves here, and they do not feed until they head back north. More than 10,000 humpbacks migrate to Hawaiʻi each winter, and the shallow channels between Maui, Lānaʻi, Molokaʻi and Kahoʻolawe are prime habitat. Maui logged the highest shore count of any island in January 2026.

The shore counts show the shape of a season. Volunteers on Maui counted 694 whales on 31 January 2026, 847 on 28 February and 141 on 28 March. Numbers build through January, hold through February and the first half of March, then fall away fast.

When to book, and when to travel

If you can choose your dates, aim for late January through mid-March and book the boat once your flights are set. If you are coming in November, early December, April or May, you can still see whales, but choose a listing whose season covers your dates and one that publishes a sighting guarantee you can read in full.

On the listings we track, each option keeps the same per-person price across its season: the Pacific Whale Foundation Māʻalaea trip shows one price for its whole November to April window, and Sea Maui shows one price from mid-December to mid-April. What a peak month costs you is choice of departure time. Holiday weeks and February are when the popular morning slots go first.

Weather figures are long-term averages at Kahului Airport; it feels cooler on the water with wind. “Running” means the month falls inside the listing’s bookable season as of October 2026.

Each month has its own guide: December for the season opening, January for the build to the peak, February for the high point, March for the late peak and April for the end of the season.

The edges of the season: November, April and May

The first whales can arrive as early as September or October. In 2025 the first Maui sighting was reported on 21 September, yet November and May remain the thin ends of the season.

That is where the featured raft fits. Hawaii Ocean Rafting’s eco-raft tour is bookable all year, with a whale or a dolphin option, and its listing names November and May as early-season whale months. It checks in at the Dive Maui shop, 1223 Front St in Lahaina, 30 minutes before departure, costs from $85 depending on the option, and carries a 4.9 rating from 2,859 reviews, the most of any whale-watch listing in our data. It is a low raft, so expect spray; it takes no pregnant guests and no children under 3, and guests must board unassisted. Our review covers the details.

At the late end, the Kaulana whale watch from Lahaina Harbor runs the longest season of the big boats, to 15 May, and it is wheelchair accessible. Some guarantees are written for set months: Ultimate Whale Watch and Dive Maui promise sightings on December to April trips only, so read the dates on any guarantee before you rely on it. Our sightings guarantee guide compares the terms.

Off-season months and what to book instead

From June to October, humpbacks are mostly on their feeding grounds in Alaska and other colder waters. The Sanctuary notes whales “may be encountered in limited numbers during other months”, but no boat on this site sells a summer whale watch. Summer brings steadier trade winds, blowing 80 to 95 percent of the time from May to September, and the year-round trips take over: Maui sunset cruises, snorkeling tours and Molokini crater trips.

Time of day matters at any point in the season. Mornings are usually calmer and the wind usually builds after late morning, especially around Māʻalaea; our morning or afternoon guide covers it.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best month to see whales in Maui?

February is usually the strongest month, inside a January to March peak. Maui’s shore count reached 847 whales on 28 February 2026, against 694 on 31 January and 141 on 28 March. Any week from late January to mid-March is a strong choice.

When do the whales arrive in Maui?

The season generally starts in November, and a few whales arrive in September or October; the first Maui sighting of the 2025–26 season came on 21 September. Numbers build through December, and most whale-watch boats start their seasons between 1 and 15 December.

When do whales leave Maui?

Numbers fall steeply from late March, and most whales have left by May. The Sanctuary describes the season as running until early May. On this site, the last whale-watch season to close is Kaulana’s from Lahaina Harbor, on 15 May.

When is peak whale season in Maui?

January to March, according to NOAA’s Sanctuary. On Maui that peak usually holds from late January to mid-March, with February at the top.

Can you see whales in Maui in July or June?

Rarely. Humpbacks spend the summer feeding in colder northern waters, and whales are encountered only in limited numbers outside November to May. Summer raft trips such as Hawaii Ocean Rafting’s switch to a dolphin option.

When should I book for the whale season on Maui?

Book once your flights are fixed if you are travelling over Christmas, New Year or in February. Per-person prices on the listings we track stay the same across the season, so booking early secures a departure time and costs nothing extra on a free-cancellation listing.
