Maui Whale Watching in April

Whale watching on Maui in April: which tours still run and until when, which sighting guarantees end in mid-April, and how to pair a late trip with snorkeling.

Updated October 2026

Yes, there are still whales around Maui in April, but fewer every week, and the bigger question is which boats are still going out. The listings we compare stop on different dates: Sea Maui’s Kāʻanapali whale watch is bookable to 14 April, Pacific Whale Foundation’s to 15 April, Quicksilver’s and Malolo’s to 30 April, and the Kaulana from Lahaina Harbor to 15 May. Several sighting guarantees also end in mid-April or at the end of the month, so in April check the season window and the guarantee wording before you pick a boat from our Maui whale-watching cruise comparison.

How many whales are left in April

The organised shore counts end in late March, and in 2026 it found 141 whales from Maui’s shoreline on 28 March, a small fraction of the winter peak. The Sanctuary describes the season as running roughly November to May, and NOAA’s sanctuaries office says it ends in early May, so early April trips still go out into water with whales in it, while late April trips are sailing in the last weeks of the migration.

April is the driest month of the whale season at Kahului, with 1.32 in of rain on NOAA’s 1991–2020 normals, an average high of 84.5°F and a low of 66.6°F. Daylight is long: on 15 April the sun rises in Lahaina at about 6:08 a.m. and sets at about 6:45 p.m.

Guarantees that lapse in April

Several operators promise a sighting or a free repeat trip, and in April the small print starts to bite. A promise is only as good as the dates it covers, and a “go again free” voucher is little use if the season ends, or you fly home, before the next departure.

  • Ultimate Whale Watch: “All trips from December – April are guaranteed to see whales or you go again for FREE.” Its listing keeps selling after April, outside that promise.
  • Dive Maui: guaranteed sightings from December to April, or your next trip is free, or your money back, your choice. The money-back option is the one to pick on a late-April trip.
  • Hawaii Ocean Rafting: its GetYourGuide listing (eco-raft whale or dolphin tour) guarantees whale sightings from 1 December to 15 April only; after that the same raft runs as a whale-or-dolphin trip, and its Viator listing says up-close sightings are not guaranteed.
  • Pacific Whale Foundation guarantees sightings or a free repeat trip, but its season ends on 15 April. Makai Adventures, Maui Ocean Adventures and Alii Nui also promise sightings, inside windows that close on 25, 20 and 15 April.

Our sighting guarantee page compares the exact terms. Whatever the guarantee, no tour can promise a breach or a close approach, and every boat must stay at least 100 yards from a whale.

Kaulana: the latest window, from Lahaina Harbor

The featured tour, Hawaii Ocean Project’s 2-hour whale watch on the Kaulana, has the latest end date of the seasonal whale watches we review: it is bookable from 15 December to 15 May. It costs from $70 on Viator (its new GetYourGuide twin is $75) and holds a 4.8 rating from 235 reviews. The boat is multi-level with a shaded main cabin, a marine bathroom and an underwater hydrophone. The listing calls it generally wheelchair accessible and asks you to call first, caps capacity at 80 passengers, and lets you bring your own snacks and drinks.

Check in at least 30 minutes early at the main loading dock of Lahaina Harbor, nearest the lighthouse (675 Wharf St.), and look for crew in blue Hawaii Ocean Project shirts. Lahaina Harbor reopened in a limited way in December 2025; as of October 2026 it runs daytime operations only, for permitted operators. County lots at 116 Prison St. and 500 Front St. offer free three-hour parking and close at 6 p.m.; check MauiRecovers.org for current access. More detail is in our Kaulana review.

Pairing a late whale watch with snorkeling

April is a good month to give a day to snorkeling as well, and two kinds of trip mix both. The Pride of Maui combination stops on 1 April. After that, the simplest plan is a short whale watch one morning and a snorkel trip another, since the water is usually calmest early in the day and the wind tends to build after late morning.

Keep at least 10 ft from green sea turtles in the water and never touch them. Our Maui snorkeling tours and Molokini crater trips pages compare the options.

Frequently asked questions

Are there still whales in Maui in April?

Yes, in smaller numbers. The season runs roughly November to May, and whales leave gradually. Early April trips are the better bet; by late April only a few whale watches still run, and the 28 March 2026 count was already down to 141 from Maui’s shore.

Is whale watching good in Maui in April?

It can be, especially in the first half of the month, when most operators are still sailing and several guarantees still apply. Late April has fewer boats and fewer whales, so choose a trip with a guarantee you can use before you leave.

Are there still whales in Maui in May?

A few. NOAA’s sanctuaries office says the season ends in early May. The Kaulana from Lahaina Harbor is bookable to 15 May, and Hawaii Ocean Rafting says it often spots late whales through 15 May, without a guarantee.

Is there whale watching in Maui in June?

Not as a season. The Sanctuary says whales may be met in limited numbers outside November to May, but none of the whale watches we compare promise whales in June, and the seasonal ones have stopped by then. Hawaii Ocean Rafting switches to dolphin searches from May to November.

What can I do instead of whale watching after the season?

Book a snorkel trip to Molokini or Turtle Town, or an evening sail. See our Maui sunset cruises, many of which run all year.
