"These guys knew what they were doing. Had everything down like a fine science. We saw many whales and 2 that breaches. We also got lucky and has 2 orcas swim right next to the catamaran. If they had breached everyone on the catamaran would have been wet. The crew was very interactive and attentive."

How Beach Boarding Works
Check in at the kiosk, take your shoes off, wade out and climb aboard.
Check in at the kiosk
Check in half an hour before departure at the Sea Maui kiosk between Leilani's and Hula Grill on the Whalers Village beach walk. Bring your Whalers Village parking ticket to check-in for four free hours of validation.
Shoes off, wade out
There is no pier at Kāʻanapali. Boats come up to the sand and you board from the beach, so expect wet feet or wet knees, take your shoes off and bag your phone. Sea Maui does not recommend this trip for travelers with mobility issues.
Two hours with the whales
Trained naturalists explain what you are seeing while the crew looks for active whales. The open bar, snacks, taxes and fees are included in the fare; gratuities are not.
Back on the beach
You land where you started, a short walk from the Kāʻanapali resorts. Sea Maui's whale-watch season runs 15 December 2026 to 14 April 2027, with free cancellation on the listing.

Whale Watching From Kāʻanapali Beach
Who loads from the sand, where to check in, how wet you get and who should drive to a harbor instead.
If you are staying on the Kāʻanapali resort strip, a beach-loading whale watch saves you the drive to a harbor: you check in on the beach walk, take your shoes off and climb aboard from the sand. The trade-off is boarding. You will get wet feet and possibly wet knees, and Sea Maui and Teralani both warn travelers with limited mobility away from it. Sea Maui’s two-hour open-bar cruise from Whalers Village is our pick for most guests, and Teralani’s sailing catamaran is the close alternative.

What beach loading really means
Kāʻanapali has no harbor or pier. The catamarans nose up to the surf line and lower a staircase with handrails, or a small boat shuttles you out. Waves splash about a foot deep and can reach your knees, so wear a swimsuit or shorts, not jeans. Shoes come off and wait on the beach in a bin, and you go barefoot on board. Put your phone and camera in a dry bag or zip bag before you wade.
That is fine for most people, but it is a real limit for anyone who cannot walk on soft sand, step through moving water or climb a few steps from the surf. Sea Maui says its whale watch is not recommended for travelers with mobility issues because it loads from the beach. Teralani’s whale watch sail lists wheelchair users as not suitable, and its premium whale watch notes that the beach-loading catamaran requires climbing stairs to the boat. If that rules you out, Māʻalaea Harbor’s dock boarding is easier; our Māʻalaea harbor guide lists the options.
Winter also brings northwest swells that can make Kāʻanapali’s beach conditions rougher, since the coast faces west. Operators decide on the day, so keep your phone number on the booking.
Where each operator checks in
All four check-in points sit within a short walk of Whalers Village, but they are different spots, so read your voucher.
- Sea Maui uses a kiosk between Leilani’s and Hula Grill along the beach walk at Whalers Village, 30 minutes before departure. Its whale watch, its premium sunset dinner cruise and its other sails all start here.
- Teralani’s whale watch listing gives only “Kaanapali” as the meeting point. Teralani’s sunset sails check in on the ocean side of the Outrigger Kāʻanapali Beach Resort, so the voucher is where to confirm the spot for your trip.
- The Magic Merman checks in on the beach in front of Whalers Village, between Leilani’s and The Westin, half an hour before departure. Look for crew in green shirts.
- Maui Whale Adventures is directly on the beach behind Whalers Village: walk through the shopping center to the sand and look for two large yellow umbrellas that say “Whale Tours”.
Parking is simplest with Sea Maui, which validates four free hours in the Whalers Village parking structure if you bring your ticket to check-in. The other listings do not mention parking, so ask the operator or walk from your hotel.
Teralani’s three whale watches
Teralani runs three whale-watch formats from the beach, and only the standard sail has a full page on this site. The two-hour whale watch sail at $113 includes breakfast snacks, Kona coffee, juices, soft drinks and Pogmosas, with a naturalist and a hydrophone, and its listing promises whales or you go again free. The Express Whale Watch is a 1.5-hour, 1 p.m. trip at $92 without snacks or drinks, aimed at budget travelers. The Premium Whale Watch runs 2.5 hours at 12:30 p.m. for $167, with an open bar, appetizers and a 39-guest limit, though it has only seven reviews so far. Read our Teralani review for the standard sail.
Rafts from the beach
Two operators run rafts off Kāʻanapali Beach. The Magic Merman’s two-hour whale watch, rated 4.9 from 156 reviews, keeps you low to the water. Maui Whale Adventures’ full-shade raft, rated 4.8 from 105 reviews, adds a canopy and a listing that promises whales and whale song or your money back. Both rule out pregnant travelers and those with spinal injuries or poor heart health. A raft does not get you closer by law: every vessel, raft or catamaran, keeps 100 yards from humpbacks, and a whale that approaches a stopped boat is its own choice. More West Maui rafts leave from Māla Boat Ramp near Lahaina; see our Lahaina departures page and the raft tours guide.
Who Kāʻanapali suits
Choose Kāʻanapali if you are staying on the resort strip, want an open bar without driving afterwards, or want to fit a whale watch around a beach day. It also avoids Honoapiʻilani Highway, the only road between West Maui and Māʻalaea, which closed several times in 2026.
Look elsewhere if anyone in your group has trouble with sand, water or steps, if you want a dock and the widest choice of boats, or if you are staying in Kīhei or Wailea; Kāʻanapali is about 54 minutes from Kahului Airport and much farther from South Maui. Our Kāʻanapali vs Māʻalaea comparison walks through the decision, and the best Maui whale watching tours page ranks the boats themselves. For a dinner with whales in season, see our whale watching dinner cruises.
Whale season runs roughly November to May with the peak in January to March. Sea Maui’s whale watch runs 15 December to 14 April, so earlier and later trips are sunset or snorkel sails, not whale watches. Packing for wet boarding is covered in what to wear whale watching.

Kāʻanapali Whale Watching: Questions
Season, beach boarding, meeting points, parking, open bars and access on Kāʻanapali whale watches.
Humpback season around Maui runs roughly November to May, with the peak from January to March, and whales thin out sharply in late March. Each boat sets its own window: Sea Maui's whale watch runs 15 December 2026 to 14 April 2027, and its sunset dinner cruise includes whale watching from 15 December to 15 April. Outside those dates the same boats run sunset and snorkel sails. Best time for whales.
There is no pier. You check in on the beach walk, take your shoes off and leave them in a bin on the sand, then wade out to the boat, which noses up to the surf line and lowers a staircase with handrails, or a small boat shuttles you out. Water usually splashes about a foot deep and can reach your knees, so wear a swimsuit or shorts and bag your phone.
Around Whalers Village, at different spots. Sea Maui uses a kiosk between Leilani's and Hula Grill on the beach walk. The Magic Merman meets on the beach between Leilani's and The Westin. Maui Whale Adventures sets up two yellow umbrellas on the sand behind Whalers Village. Teralani's whale watch lists only Kāʻanapali, and its sunset sails check in by the Outrigger, so confirm the spot on your voucher.
Yes, in the Whalers Village parking structure. Sea Maui validates four free hours there, as long as you bring your parking ticket to check-in before the boat leaves. The Teralani, Magic Merman and Maui Whale Adventures listings do not mention parking, so ask the operator, or walk or ride over from your hotel if you are staying on the resort strip. Sea Maui review.
Some do. Sea Maui's two-hour whale watch includes an open bar and snacks, and Teralani's Premium Whale Watch adds an open bar and appetizers over 2.5 hours. Teralani's standard whale watch sail includes Kona coffee, juices, soft drinks and Pogmosas, and its 1.5-hour Express trip has no food or drinks. The rafts offer water and sodas only. The minimum drinking age on board is 21.
It is the most convenient for resort-strip guests, and the boats head into the same shallow Maui Nui waters humpbacks favor. You trade some choice: four operators in our data load from the beach, against seven at Māʻalaea and more from Lahaina and Māla. Beach boarding is wetter and harder for limited mobility, and the west-facing coast can catch winter northwest swell. Kāʻanapali vs Māʻalaea.
Usually not. Sea Maui says its whale watch is not recommended for travelers with mobility issues because it loads from the beach, Teralani lists wheelchair users as not suitable, and its premium boat requires climbing stairs from the surf. Guests who struggle with sand, moving water or steps do better with dock boarding at Māʻalaea Harbor or the wheelchair-accessible Kaulana at Lahaina Harbor. Easy-access whale watching.
Yes, two. The Magic Merman runs a two-hour raft whale watch from the beach in front of Whalers Village, rated 4.9 from 156 reviews, from $102. Maui Whale Adventures runs a full-shade raft from behind Whalers Village, rated 4.8 from 105 reviews, from $129. Both rule out pregnant travelers and those with spinal injuries or poor heart health, and like every boat they keep 100 yards from whales.
