"This was handicap accessible which was most important to us. The crew was friendly and very knowledgeable. We saw so many whales, it was unbelievable. Love the top deck to be able to look out. Would definitely do this again, highly recommend."

How a Kaulana Trip Runs
Park in a County lot, check in by the lighthouse, and be back well before the harbor closes.
Park in a County lot
The County's free three-hour lots at 116 Prison St and 500 Front St are the closest, and both close at 6 p.m. (as of August 2026). Drop-offs for kūpuna and guests with limited mobility can use the 15-minute zones on Wharf Street.
Check in by the lighthouse
Check in at least 30 minutes before departure at the main loading dock of Lahaina Harbor, the one nearest the lighthouse, at 675 Wharf St. Look for crew in blue Hawaii Ocean Project shirts, bring photo ID and sign the waiver. Boarding closes 5 minutes before departure.
Two hours on Kaulana
Watch from the open decks or the shaded main cabin while the crew explains what the whales are doing and lowers a hydrophone. Snacks and drinks are sold on board, alcohol is not included, and you may bring your own snacks.
Season and refunds
Kaulana's whale watches run 15 December 2026 to 15 May 2027. The listing offers a full refund with 24 hours' notice, and the operator may substitute vessels or routes for weather.

Where Lahaina Whale Watches Leave From Now
Lahaina Harbor, Māla Boat Ramp and the Front Street check-ins, with parking and hours as of October 2026.
Most whale watches sold as “from Lahaina” leave from Māla Boat Ramp, about a mile north of town, or check in at a shop on Front Street near the Lahaina Cannery Mall. Lahaina Harbor itself reopened in a limited way on 15 December 2025, and as of October 2026 only permitted operators sail from it, in daylight only. If you want a bigger boat with a restroom, shade and wheelchair access, Hawaii Ocean Project’s Kaulana from the harbor’s main loading dock is our pick. If you want a small raft close to the water, the Māla boats are the choice. Whatever the title says, the meeting point on your voucher is the one that counts.

Lahaina Harbor: open, but limited
Lahaina Small Boat Harbor reopened for limited commercial operations on 15 December 2025, for the first time since the August 2023 wildfire. As of the County’s August 2026 update, only operators with DOBOR permits may use it, pier access is daytime only with no harbor activity after 6 p.m., and the harbor still had no grid power when DOBOR reported on 8 October 2026. Piers and wharves are being rebuilt in stages through 2027 and into 2028, so expect construction through this whale season. The County’s Lahaina Harbor access page has the current rules.
The harbor whale watches in our data:
- Hawaii Ocean Project’s Kaulana checks in at the main loading dock nearest the lighthouse. Its GetYourGuide listing, Lahaina Whale Watching Cruise, is $75 but new and not yet reviewed. Our Kaulana review has the details.
- Maui Adventure Cruises’ Super Raft whale watch checks in at the slip 11 harbor booth, 30 minutes early, from $132. Children must be 5 or older.
- Sail Maui’s motors-off whale watch sail and Pacific Whale Foundation’s Whalewatch Sail from Lahaina both check in at the parking lot at 116 Prison Street. Sail Maui says its crew escorts you to the harbor.
Sail Maui also lists its Alihilani sunset sail from Lahaina Harbor, with whales from December through March. Because the harbor is daylight-only and winter sunset falls between 5:48 and 6:45 p.m., check the departure time and dock on your voucher before you plan an evening around it.
Māla Boat Ramp and the Front Street check-ins
Māla is a state boat ramp with two launch ramps, two loading docks and restrooms, and since late 2023 it has been West Maui’s working commercial ramp. It also houses the state’s temporary West Maui harbor office. Several operators meet you right at the ramp; others check you in at a shop on Front Street.
- Ultimate Whale Watch checks in 20 minutes early at 1223 Front St in the boat yard, and departs from Māla. Its VIP trip for 12 guests lists Māla Boat Yard, 1237 Front St.
- Hawaii Ocean Rafting checks in 30 minutes early at 1223 Front St, the Dive Maui shop next to Snorkel Bob’s, and asks you to park near the Lahaina Cannery. Late arrivals are not refunded.
- Dive Maui meets at its Front Street shop near the Cannery Mall, Snorkel Bob’s and the “Jesus is coming soon” sign, and its description says the boat departs from Māla Ramp.
- Makai Adventures meets at Māla Boat Ramp, under the tree on the ocean side of the trailer parking lot, at least 15 minutes early. Late check-ins count as no-shows.
- Maui Ocean Adventures meets at the ramp itself. Walk toward the water from the “Jesus Coming Soon” sign on Front Street.
Parking without the stress
Do not park in the Māla Boat Ramp lot. Maui Ocean Adventures says it is reserved for resident trucks and trailers, and the operators recommend Uber or Lyft, or a drop-off while the driver finds parking. The Maui Bus stop at the Cannery Mall is an 8 to 10 minute walk from the ramp. For Front Street check-ins, Hawaii Ocean Rafting points you to parking near the Cannery.
For the harbor, the County runs free three-hour lots at 116 Prison St (corner of Prison and Front) and 500 Front St (corner of Shaw and Front), and asks harbor users to park at Prison Street. Both lots close at 6 p.m. Wharf Street has 15-minute loading zones for dropping off kūpuna and guests with limited mobility, and pedestrian and ADA-compliant paths lead to the loading dock.
Visiting Lahaina with care
Front Street reopened to vehicles on 1 August 2026 between Pāpalaua and Shaw streets, but much of the historic district is still closed and fenced, including Banyan Tree Park and the Courthouse, and many lots are private property. Drive at the 10 mph limit, stay on the signed pedestrian route between your car and the dock, follow your crew’s directions, and plan to be out of the harbor area by 6 p.m.
Raft or Kaulana
The rafts and small boats suit agile adults and older children. Ultimate, Hawaii Ocean Rafting and Dive Maui take no pregnant guests or children under 3, Hawaii Ocean Rafting asks that you board unassisted and warns you will get wet, and Maui Ocean Adventures has no restroom. Kaulana is the gentler choice, with a restroom, a shaded cabin, wheelchair access per the listing and infants welcome on a lap. A raft does not get closer by law: every vessel keeps 100 yards from humpbacks. Our raft tours guide and small-group page compare the formats.
Timing and drive times
The Lahaina coast is a leeward area where the sea breeze usually builds from late morning, so mornings are usually the calmer ride; see morning or afternoon. Lahaina is about 4 miles from Kāʻanapali and about 27 minutes from Māʻalaea without traffic. From Kīhei allow about 47 minutes and from Wailea about 55, and from Kahului Airport about 47, all on Honoapiʻilani Highway, the only road into West Maui. South Maui guests usually do better at Māʻalaea, and resort-strip guests can board on the sand at Kāʻanapali. For the overall ranking, see our best Maui whale watching tours.

Lahaina Whale Watching: Questions
Harbor status, where boats board, parking, timing and drive times, as of October 2026.
Humpbacks are around Maui roughly from November to May, with the peak from January to March. Each Lahaina-area boat sets its own window: Makai Adventures runs from 13 November 2026 to 25 April 2027, Kaulana and the Lahaina Sunrise trip from 15 December, and Ultimate and Dive Maui attach their sighting promises to December through April. Kaulana runs latest, to 15 May 2027. Best time for whales.
Yes. As of October 2026, several operators run whale watches from West Maui. Most use Māla Boat Ramp or check in on Front Street: Ultimate Whale Watch, Hawaii Ocean Rafting, Dive Maui, Makai Adventures and Maui Ocean Adventures. A few use Lahaina Harbor itself, including Hawaii Ocean Project's Kaulana, Maui Adventure Cruises, Sail Maui and Pacific Whale Foundation. Check the meeting point on your voucher.
In a limited way. Lahaina Harbor reopened for commercial operations on 15 December 2025. As of the County's August 2026 update, only DOBOR-permitted operators may use it, access is daytime only with nothing after 6 p.m., and DOBOR reported no grid power as of 8 October 2026. Piers are being rebuilt through 2027 and 2028. Current rules are on the County's MauiRecovers Lahaina Harbor access page.
It depends on the operator, not the title. Kaulana boards at the main loading dock by the lighthouse, Maui Adventure Cruises at the slip 11 booth, and Sail Maui and Pacific Whale Foundation check in at 116 Prison Street. Ultimate and Hawaii Ocean Rafting check in at 1223 Front St, Dive Maui at its Front Street shop, and Makai and Maui Ocean Adventures meet at Māla Boat Ramp. Ultimate review.
Morning is usually calmer. The Lahaina coast is a leeward area with a strong daily sea-breeze cycle: air is usually gentle overnight and shortly after sunrise, and the breeze builds from late morning. Rafts feel that most. Lahaina Harbor is also daylight-only, so harbor trips run well before evening, and Maui Ocean Adventures runs a sunrise trip from Māla. Morning or afternoon.
Come for the boat, and plan the day around the boat. Lahaina is still rebuilding after the August 2023 wildfire: as of August 2026 the County said no Lahaina town businesses or historic sites were open, and closed areas are fenced. Park in the County lots or the lot your operator names, stay on the signed pedestrian route, follow your crew and be clear of the harbor by 6 p.m.
From Kāʻanapali it is short, about 4 miles. From South Maui it is a real drive: about 23 miles and 47 minutes from Kīhei and about 28 miles and 55 minutes from Wailea without traffic, all on Honoapiʻilani Highway, the only road into West Maui. Kīhei and Wailea guests save close to an hour of round-trip driving by sailing from Māʻalaea instead. Kīhei and Wailea departures.
For Lahaina Harbor, use the County's free three-hour lots at 116 Prison St or 500 Front St, which close at 6 p.m.; the County asks harbor users to park at Prison Street. Do not park in the Māla Boat Ramp lot, which Maui Ocean Adventures says is reserved for resident trucks and trailers. For Front Street check-ins, Hawaii Ocean Rafting suggests parking near the Lahaina Cannery.
