Sails up and motors off, views of Lānaʻi and Molokaʻi, light appetizers, an open bar, and a chance of humpbacks from December through March.

Highlights

  • Sail the ʻAuʻau Channel with views of Lānaʻi and Molokaʻi
  • Motors off once the sails are up, for a true sailing run
  • Golden-hour light over the water as the evening comes on
  • Whale watching is part of the trip from December through March
  • Capped at 49 guests on the catamaran ʻAlihilani

What's Included

  • Light appetizers
  • Open bar with sparkling wine, white wine, local beer and cocktails
  • Assorted non-alcoholic drinks
  • About 2.5 hours under sail on the catamaran ʻAlihilani
  • Seating on the forward trampolines or in the shaded cabin

How the Alihilani Evening Runs

Confirm your dock and time, board in Lahaina, then sail into the sunset.

  1. Check your voucher

Sail Maui lists this sail from Lahaina Harbor, which reopened for limited operations in December 2025. Departure times move with the sunset, so confirm the time and the dock on your voucher before you set out.

  2. Park and check in

Sail Maui's sister listings check guests in at the 116 Prison St parking lot and walk them to the harbor. The County's free three-hour lots close at 6 p.m., so ask the crew where to leave your car for an evening trip.

  3. Sail with the motors off

The crew raises the sails and cuts the motors once conditions allow. Sit on the forward trampolines or in the shaded cabin with light appetizers and an open bar of beer, wine and cocktails.

  4. Watch for whales in season

From December through March the listing says humpbacks may be seen on the way. This is a sunset sail with a whale bonus, not a guaranteed whale watch, and every boat keeps 100 yards from the whales.

Sunset whale trips

Sunset Sail or Sunset Whale Watch?

What each kind of evening trip is for, sunset times by month and when the season ends.

A sunset whale trip on Maui comes in two kinds, and they are different evenings. Dedicated sunset whale watches, such as Maui Ocean Adventures’ West Maui Sunset Whale Watch or Malolo’s Sunset Whale Watch from Māʻalaea, spend the trip looking for humpbacks and happen to run at the end of the day. Sunset sails, such as Sail Maui’s Alihilani sunset sail, are evening sails with drinks and appetizers that may pass whales in winter. If whales are the point of the evening, book a dedicated departure. If the sail and the light matter most, a sunset sail between December and March gives you a chance of both.

Dedicated sunset whale watch or sunset sail

A dedicated whale watch chooses its route by where the whales are, talks you through what they are doing and often lowers a hydrophone so you can hear the males sing. Several of them put a sightings promise in the listing. Maui Ocean Adventures’ sunset trip opens with the words “Guaranteed whale sightings” and carries a hydrophone. Dive Maui’s Day or Sunset Whale Watching Tour is a raft trip with a naturalist and, on its GetYourGuide listing, guaranteed sightings or a free trip another day.

A sunset sail is built around the sail and the bar. The operators say so themselves. Teralani’s Kāʻanapali sunset cocktail sail states that from 1 November to 15 April it focuses on sailing, and “it will not be an official whale watch”. Sail Maui says the Alihilani “doubles as a Maui whale watching sunset sail” from December through March. Pacific Whale Foundation adds a whale-watch component and 30 extra minutes to its Maui Sunset Sail from 20 December to 31 March.

Pacific Whale Foundation’s Sunset Dinner Cruise & Whale Watch sits between the two: a three-hour whale watch with marine naturalists and a four-course dinner, from Māʻalaea. Our dinner cruise comparison covers it alongside the other meal trips.

The Alihilani sunset sail from Lahaina

The Alihilani is a sailing catamaran that takes up to 49 guests. Once out of the harbor the crew raises the sails and turns off the motors for the run along the ʻAuʻau Channel, with Lānaʻi and Molokaʻi on the horizon. Guests sit on the forward trampolines or in the shaded cabin, with light appetizers, soft drinks and an open bar of beer, wine and cocktails. The listing does not suit people with mobility impairments. It is rated 4.8 from 371 reviews and costs from $127 per person, with free cancellation up to 24 hours ahead. Our review has the full breakdown.

The harbor is the one thing to confirm before you go. Sail Maui sells this trip from Lahaina Harbor, and its Viator sister listings check guests in at the 116 Prison St parking lot and escort them to the boat. The harbor reopened for limited, permitted operations on 15 December 2025, after the August 2023 wildfire, and County of Maui guidance as of August 2026 describes it as daytime-only, with no harbor activity after 6 p.m. Evening sailings are still listed, which is why the voucher matters. Check the departure time and dock on your voucher, and see MauiRecovers for current access. The free County lots also close at 6 p.m., so ask the crew where to park. Our Lahaina page covers the harbor and Māla in more detail.

Sunset times through the season

These are Lahaina times; Māʻalaea and Kīhei are about a minute earlier.

DateSunset (Lahaina)Civil twilight ends

15 January 20276:06 p.m.About 6:30 p.m.

15 March 20276:36 p.m.About 7:00 p.m.
15 April 20276:45 p.m.About 7:09 p.m.

Operators time these trips around sunset, so the departure shifts by nearly an hour between December and April. Sea Maui, for example, says check-in times vary through the year and are on your confirmation email. Civil twilight, the last of the usable light, ends about 24 minutes after sunset.

What the evening on the water feels like

Trade winds on Maui’s leeward side usually build after late morning, and Māʻalaea Bay is known for strong afternoon winds. An afternoon or sunset trip is usually breezier and choppier than a morning one, which matters if you get seasick. Our morning or afternoon guide weighs the trade-off, and the seasickness guide covers what helps.

It also cools off. NOAA’s normal February low at Kahului is about 64°F, and wind on the water makes it feel cooler than that once the sun is down. One reviewer of the Pacific Whale Foundation dinner cruise advised bringing a small jacket because it was chilly by the end. Pack a light layer; our what to wear guide has the rest.

Every vessel, from a sailing catamaran to a raft, must stay at least 100 yards from humpbacks under the federal approach rule. If a whale surfaces near a stopped boat, the boat waits. No sunset trip can promise a breach.

When sunset whale trips run

Whale season runs roughly November to May, with the peak from January to March, and whales are scarce at both ends. The listings set their own windows: Maui Ocean Adventures’ sunset whale watch from 1 December to 20 April, Malolo’s from 1 December to 30 April, and the Pacific Whale Foundation dinner whale watch from 15 November to 15 April. Sail Maui names December through March for whales on the Alihilani, and Sea Maui includes whale watching on its sunset trips from 15 December to 15 April. Shore counts fall steeply in late March, so a sunset trip in April is mostly a sunset trip. Our best time guide goes month by month.

Outside those windows the same evening boats keep sailing, but as sunset cruises only. If you are visiting in summer or autumn, see Maui sunset cruises.

Which evening trip suits you

Pick a dedicated sunset whale watch if humpbacks are the reason for the trip. Maui Ocean Adventures suits West Maui guests who can manage without a restroom for two hours, and Malolo is the low-cost choice from Māʻalaea. Pick the Alihilani or another sunset sail if you want an evening out with drinks and a sail, and treat any whales as a bonus. Pick the Pacific Whale Foundation dinner cruise if you want naturalists and a full meal in one booking. For the overall ranking, see the best Maui whale watching tours.
