How the Sunrise Trip Runs
Get dropped off at Māla, meet the crew at the ramp, two hours on the water.
Get there without parking at the ramp
The Māla Boat Ramp lot is reserved for resident trucks and trailers, so do not park there. The operator recommends Uber or Lyft, and a driver can drop guests off while finding parking. The Cannery Mall bus stop is an 8–10 minute walk.
Meet at Māla Boat Ramp
Look for the “Jesus Coming Soon” sign on Front Street and walk toward the water. Arrive early; your check-in time is on the voucher, because sunrise moves through the season.
Two hours at first light
The small group heads out on the operator's pink boat, with 360-degree views and a hydrophone lowered to listen for singing males. Bottled water is included; there are no restrooms on board.
Back before the wind
You are back at Māla by mid-morning, usually before the sea breeze builds. The trip runs 15 December 2026 to 20 April 2027, takes children 3 and older and asks for moderate fitness.

Morning vs afternoon
What Changes Between a Morning and an Afternoon Trip
Wind and sea state, light, temperature, sunset times and what whales do.
Book a morning whale watch on Maui if a smooth ride matters to you. On the leeward coast the air is usually gentle overnight and until shortly after sunrise, and the sea breeze and trade winds usually build from late morning, so afternoon trips tend to be windier and choppier, especially out of Māʻalaea. The whales themselves keep no timetable: we found no reliable evidence that humpbacks are more active at any particular time of day. Choose the hour for sea state, light and your own schedule, and choose the month for whale numbers.
What the wind does through the day
NOAA’s Western Regional Climate Center names the Lahaina District as a leeward area with a well-marked daily cycle: a sea breeze moves inland between late morning and early evening, sometimes fairly brisk, and the air drifts back gently overnight until shortly after sunrise. That is the basis for the familiar advice that mornings are calmer. It is a tendency, not a rule. In winter the trade winds blow only 50 to 80 percent of the time, and fronts and Kona storms can bring days of southerly or westerly wind whatever the hour.
Māʻalaea Bay is the place where timing matters most. It is known for strong afternoon trade winds, and the National Weather Service forecasts it as its own marine zone and often includes it in small-craft advisories. Kāʻanapali faces west and can pick up northwest swell in winter at any time of day.

The Teralani Express is listed on GetYourGuide; the Malolo trip is sold there as an afternoon whale watch. Departure times not shown in a listing are on your voucher.
Morning trips: sunrise to late morning
Sunrise in Lahaina moves from 6:56 a.m. in mid-December to 7:06 a.m. in mid-January, then earlier through spring: 6:56 a.m. in mid-February, 6:35 a.m. in mid-March and 6:08 a.m. in mid-April. The Maui Ocean Adventures sunrise trip from Māla follows that clock, so the check-in time on your voucher changes with the date. Early trips have the gentlest air on most days, the low sun gives softer light for photos, and the boat is back before the breeze builds. Bring a light layer, because winter lows at Kahului run about 63 to 67°F and it feels cooler on the water. Redline’s 7 a.m. raft from Kīhei checks in at the dirt lot above the ramp; the 9 and 11 a.m. departures check in at the picnic tables above the dock. Read our sunrise trip review and our Redline review.
Midday and afternoon trips
Around midday the sun is high, light is flatter and glare off the water is stronger, and by early afternoon the sea breeze is usually up. In return, afternoons are warmer and you do not need an early alarm. Teralani’s Express leaves Kāʻanapali Beach at 1:00 p.m. and its premium whale watch at 12:30 p.m. The Malolo afternoon trip leaves from Māʻalaea, where the wind is most likely to build, so it suits travelers who are not prone to seasickness. If you are, read our seasickness guide and take any medicine well before boarding, since it works best before symptoms start.
Sunset trips
Sunset falls between 5:48 p.m. in mid-December and 6:45 p.m. in mid-April, so evening whale watches run in the late afternoon and finish around dusk. Sunset dinner cruises leave from Māʻalaea with Pacific Whale Foundation and from Kāʻanapali Beach with Sea Maui, which says its trip returns to the beach just after sunset. Lahaina Harbor is open in daylight only and closes after 6 p.m., so a Lahaina listing sold as a sunset trip may not be on the water at sunset for much of the season; check the departure point and time on your voucher. Our sunset whale watching page and dinner cruise page compare those trips.
Are whales more active at a certain time?
We found no reliable evidence that humpbacks in Maui waters are more active in the morning or the afternoon. Whale behavior varies from trip to trip and day to day, and no boat can promise a breach. Season matters far more: whales are around roughly November to May, the peak is January to March, and shore counts drop steeply by late March. If you have a choice, a mid-season morning gives you the most whales and the calmest water; the best time guide covers the months.
How to choose
Pick a morning trip if you get seasick, are bringing small children or want the softest light. Pick an afternoon trip if you want to sleep in, are staying in Kāʻanapali and want to board from the beach, or simply found a better price. Pick a sunset trip if dinner and the evening light matter more than a calm ride. Staying in Kīhei or Wailea, Redline’s 7 a.m. raft is about 2 miles from Wailea, so an early start costs little sleep; from Kāʻanapali, a morning trip out of Māʻalaea means leaving well before check-in, since the drive is about 35 minutes without traffic and more at rush hour. For the overall ranking by traveler type, see the best Maui whale watching tours, and for West Maui departures the Lahaina page.

"Shannon and Emma were so knowledgeable and also so very caring. They led us to the right place. We experienced so many whales and were fortunate enough to see a baby breach 4 times just off the boat. We had an excellent time. I highly recommend this boat."
"We had a great trip. We saw lots of whales. The boat was comfortable and the staff was wonderful! We have booked a second boat trip at the end of our stay."
"This is hands down the best Whale watching tour we've ever been on. Captain Emma and first mate were friendly, informative and were just as excited as we were to see whales. The boat is extremely comfortable and the whales came a lot closer than with a catamaran tour. If you're in the area look no further than this tour, guarantee you will not regret it."
"Whale watching was fantastic with our knowledgeable and fun captains! Would highly recommend. We saw several whales including a baby who showed off jumping for us!!"

Morning or Afternoon: Questions
Sea state, wind, whale activity, sunset trips and departure times.
Morning is usually better for a smooth ride. NOAA's regional climate center describes Lahaina's coast as having gentle air overnight until shortly after sunrise, with a sea breeze building from late morning to early evening. Afternoons are warmer and suit late risers, but expect more wind and chop, especially from Māʻalaea. Whale sightings do not depend on the hour. Compare the departures.
For comfort, morning is the safer bet on Maui, because the water is usually calmer before the afternoon breeze. For whales, it makes little difference: we found no reliable evidence that humpbacks are more active at one time of day. Pick a morning if you get seasick or have young children, and an afternoon or sunset trip if you prefer to sleep in or want the evening light.
There is no reliable evidence that Maui's humpbacks are more active at a particular hour. Breaches, tail slaps and singing happen throughout the day, and behavior varies from trip to trip. What changes whale numbers is the season: roughly November to May, with the peak from January to March and a steep drop by late March. Best time of year.
No time of day stands out in the sources we rely on. Humpbacks come to Maui to mate, give birth and nurse calves, and they do not feed here, so there is no feeding schedule to follow. Visitors see mother-and-calf pairs resting at the surface as well as fast-moving competition groups, and none of it is tied to a schedule we can find. Choose your departure for sea state and light, and your dates for the peak months.
Either works for the whales, but the experience differs. Morning trips usually have calmer water and cooler air, and the sunrise trip from Māla Boat Ramp heads out at first light. Evening trips finish around sunset, between 5:48 p.m. in mid-December and 6:45 p.m. in mid-April, and the light fades as the trip ends. Sunset trips are also windier on most days. Sunset whale watches.
The month matters more than the hour. In the peak months of January to March, morning, afternoon and sunset trips all run in whale waters, and many operators list a sighting guarantee for their season whatever the departure time. No trip can promise what the whales will do once you find them. If you also want a calmer ride, pick a morning departure. Sighting guarantees.
Usually, yes. On the leeward coast the sea breeze builds between late morning and early evening, and Māʻalaea Bay is known for strong afternoon trade winds; the National Weather Service forecasts it as its own marine zone and often includes it in small-craft advisories. In winter, fronts and Kona storms can upset the pattern for days, so always check the forecast for your date. Māʻalaea departures.
It depends on the operator. Redline Rafting runs 7, 9 and 11 a.m. departures from Kīhei Boat Ramp. Maui Ocean Adventures' sunrise trip leaves Māla Boat Ramp at first light, which moves from about 7:06 a.m. in mid-January to 6:08 a.m. in mid-April, so the exact check-in is on your voucher. Most other listings show their times only on the booking page. Sunrise trip review.
