"This was an absolutely amazing experience! There are so many places to choose from, but we were told this one was highly recommended and we now see why. Small group, in a boat low to the water so we could easily maneuver to be safely near where the whales went — obviously keeping a distance to not in"

How the Eco-Raft Whale Watch Runs
Check in on Front Street, board unassisted, two hours on the raft.
Choose the whale option
The same listing sells whale trips and summer dolphin trips, so pick the whale option. Viator fares start at $85 and the main options run to about $111, depending on the departure.
Check in 30 minutes early
Park near the Lahaina Cannery and check in at the Dive Maui shop, 1223 Front Street, next to Snorkel Bob's. Late arrivals get no refund, and the operator asks you to allow extra time for road closures and traffic.
Board on your own
You must be able to step aboard unassisted because of the boarding location. Life jackets are on board for emergencies but are not required to be worn.
Plan to get wet
Spray and light rain are likely, and shade varies by boat. Bring a hat and rub-on reef-safe sunscreen (no sprays). A naturalist narrates, a hydrophone carries the songs, and you may bring drinks in plastic or cans.

What a Raft Whale Watch Is Like
Spray, seats and shade, who should skip a raft, West Maui or Kīhei, and the rule that keeps every boat 100 yards back.
A raft whale watch puts you a few feet above the sea on a fast, low boat with a small group, so a surfacing whale is at eye level instead of below a deck rail. On Maui the best-known is Hawaii Ocean Rafting’s eco-raft whale watch from Lahaina, rated 4.9 from 2,859 reviews, the most of any whale watch listing we track. Expect spray, little shade, few restrooms and strict health limits. A raft is lower than a catamaran, not closer to the whales: the same 100-yard rule applies to every boat.

What a raft ride is like
You sit low, close to the surface, and the raft runs fast between whale sightings. Hawaii Ocean Rafting tells guests to plan to get wet: ocean spray and light rain can reach you, and shade varies by boat, so bring a hat, sunglasses and rub-on reef-safe sunscreen. Life jackets are on board but you do not have to wear one. Snacks are included and you may bring your own drinks in plastic or cans. Dive Maui hands out rain ponchos on rainy days and reef-safe sunscreen. Most raft listings do not mention a restroom, so go before you board. If you want raft-level viewing with more comfort, a few larger “super rafts” add facilities: Maui Reef Adventures lists two onboard restrooms from Māʻalaea, Maui Adventure Cruises’ Explorer super raft from Lahaina Harbor lists a marine restroom, padded seating and a shaded area, and Maui Whale Adventures sells a full-shade VIP raft from Kāʻanapali Beach. Our what to wear guide covers clothing for spray.
Who should skip a raft
Raft listings carry the strictest limits of any boat type we review, and they are firm. Hawaii Ocean Rafting takes no pregnant guests, no children under 3 and no one with spinal injuries, and you must board unassisted. The Ultimate Whale Watch rafts add poor cardiovascular health. Dive Maui excludes children under 3, pregnancy and spinal injuries. Redline is strictest, with a minimum age of 8, a recommended maximum of 65 because of the adventurous ride, and no back or neck injuries. If anyone in your group falls into one of these, or simply wants a dry seat, shade and a restroom, book a catamaran. People prone to motion sickness should read our seasickness guide first.
Lahaina and Māla rafts or Kīhei rafts
Most of the rafts we review leave from West Maui. Hawaii Ocean Rafting and Dive Maui check in at shops on Front Street near the Lahaina Cannery, and the Ultimate rafts use Māla Boat Ramp and the boat yard at 1237 Front Street, about a mile north of Lahaina. None of these uses the main Lahaina Harbor, which reopened in a limited way in December 2025 and runs daytime only (current access, as of October 2026). Front Street reopened to traffic on 1 August 2026, temporary closures can still occur, and operators ask you to allow for traffic. Our Lahaina page covers access. On the south side, Redline Rafting launches from Kīhei Boat Ramp at 7, 9 and 11 a.m., runs 90 minutes and heads to the waters off the southern end of Maui. It suits Kīhei and Wailea guests, since Lahaina is about 47 minutes’ drive from Kīhei without traffic. Read our Redline review or the Kīhei page.
Lower, not closer
Federal rules in Hawaiʻi require every vessel to stay at least 100 yards from humpback whales, and that includes rafts, kayaks, paddleboards and swimmers. No raft or “eco” boat is exempt. If a whale swims toward a stopped raft, the crew stays put with the engines in neutral and waits for it to move away. A raft’s advantage is the angle: your eyes are near the water, so a blow or a fluke fills more of the view and photos look up at the whale. Hawaii Ocean Rafting’s own listing says close encounters are not guaranteed, since the animals are wild.
When the rafts run
Several West Maui rafts are bookable all year, which is not the same as whales all year. Hawaii Ocean Rafting runs dolphin searches in the summer months and looks for early-season whales in November and late ones in May, and its GetYourGuide listing guarantees whale sightings only from 1 December to 15 April. The Ultimate rafts and Dive Maui also sell year-round, but their sighting guarantees cover December to April. Redline’s whale raft from Kīhei is bookable only from 13 December to 31 March. Whale season runs roughly November to May, with the peak from January to March, so book a raft in those months if whales are the point. The best time guide has the detail.
Raft or catamaran
Choose a raft if you are agile, do not mind getting wet and want a small group at water level. Choose a catamaran if you are traveling with young children, are pregnant, have a bad back, need a restroom or want a drink in the shade. Rafts are not always pricier: Ultimate starts at $77 and Hawaii Ocean Rafting at $85, against $50 for Quicksilver’s catamaran and $103 for Sea Maui’s open bar. Hawaii Ocean Rafting costs $97 on GetYourGuide, so compare both sites. See our small group page, the prices page and the ranked picks, and read our Hawaii Ocean Rafting review.

What Raft Whale Watch Guests Say
Ratings and review counts are each platform's own figures (Viator or GetYourGuide) as of October 2026 and change day to day.
"The whole experience was awesome. The crew was very entertaining and knowledgeable. They really had to work hard to find the dolphins, but they did. They stuck around a little longer just to make sure everybody had a chance to learn about the dolphins and experience the whole venture. Highly recommend this to anyone."
"Excellent trip. Saw lots of dolphins! The captain and other staff were very knowledgeable and friendly! Would definitely recommend!"
"We had a great time searching and finding dolphins with Captain Jack and Bree. They were very informative and fun to interact with. I especially appreciated the shade parts of the boat rather than full sun. We saw some sea turtles and dolp"
"This was a highlight! The snorkeling at Lanai was better than Molakini. There were snacks on board, friendly guides, and the absolute highlight was being up close with the dolphins!"
"This was the highlight of our trip! Zach and JJ were amazing and kept the boat ride so fun and informative. We got to see 300 dolphins, and it was absolutely incredible! I highly highly recommend the boat ride, you are right on the water so the dolphins are just feet away. So cool!"
"We had a very nice excursion this morning. The crew took us to a safer spot to board as the waves were “sporty.” We snorkeled by cliff house and saw at least one turtle along with coral and tropical fish. The crew took good care of us and were very friendly and gracious."
"Fun time out on the water to snorkel. Captain Jack was safety oriented and the two naturalists ladies onboard were informative and kind."

Raft Whale Watching: Questions
Zodiac or big boat, spray and shade, age and pregnancy limits, restrooms and how close rafts can go.
Neither is better for everyone. A zodiac or raft seats a small group low to the water, so whales are at eye level and the ride is fast and lively. A big boat is drier, steadier and roomier, usually with restrooms, shade and sometimes a bar, and it accepts more ages and health conditions. Both must stay 100 yards from whales. Big boats compared.
For agile adults and older kids who want eye-level views and a small group, often yes. Hawaii Ocean Rafting's eco-raft is rated 4.9 from 2,859 reviews, and Ultimate Whale Watch and Dive Maui both hold 4.9. It is a worse choice if you need shade, a restroom or a dry seat, or if anyone is pregnant, under 3 or has a back problem. Eco-raft review.
Pick a raft if everyone is agile, does not mind spray and wants a small group at water level. Pick a catamaran if you have young children, are pregnant, have a bad back, want a restroom and shade, or want a drink on board. Prices overlap: rafts start at $77 on Ultimate, while Quicksilver's catamaran starts at $50 and Sea Maui's open-bar catamaran at $103. Ranked picks.
It can be both. Hawaii Ocean Rafting tells guests to plan to get wet, since ocean spray and light rain reach a low boat, and Redline recommends a maximum age of 65 because of the adventurous ride. Dive Maui hands out ponchos on rainy days. Wear quick-dry clothes, bag your phone and bring rub-on reef-safe sunscreen, as sprays are not allowed on Hawaii Ocean Rafting. What to wear.
Age limits, yes. Hawaii Ocean Rafting, Ultimate Whale Watch and Dive Maui take no children under 3, and Redline Rafting requires a minimum age of 8 and recommends a maximum of 65. None of the raft listings we review states a weight limit, but Hawaii Ocean Rafting requires you to board unassisted. Check the listing and ask the operator if you are unsure.
Most do not list either. Hawaii Ocean Rafting says available shade varies by boat, and its listing, like Ultimate's, Dive Maui's and Redline's, mentions no restroom. Some larger super rafts do: Maui Reef Adventures from Māʻalaea lists two onboard restrooms, and Maui Adventure Cruises' Explorer raft from Lahaina Harbor lists a marine restroom and a shaded area. Maui Whale Adventures sells a full-shade raft from Kāʻanapali.
No. Federal rules require every vessel in Hawaiʻi, rafts included, to stay at least 100 yards from humpback whales, and no boat type is exempt. If a whale approaches a stopped raft, the crew waits with the engines in neutral. What changes is your angle: you sit near the water, so the whale looks bigger in your view. Hawaii Ocean Rafting itself says close encounters are not guaranteed.
The operators say no. Hawaii Ocean Rafting, Ultimate Whale Watch, Dive Maui and Redline Rafting all exclude pregnant guests, and the Maui Reef Adventures super raft lists pregnancy as not recommended. A large catamaran from Māʻalaea or Kāʻanapali, or Hawaii Ocean Project's Kaulana from Lahaina Harbor, is the usual alternative. Ask your doctor about any boat trip. Catamarans.
Mostly West Maui. Hawaii Ocean Rafting and Dive Maui check in at shops on Front Street near the Lahaina Cannery, and Ultimate Whale Watch uses Māla Boat Ramp and its boat yard on Front Street. In South Maui, Redline Rafting launches from Kīhei Boat Ramp. A few super rafts leave from Māʻalaea Harbor, Lahaina Harbor and Kāʻanapali Beach. Kīhei departures.
