"This tour was absolutely amazing! Travis and Allison were our guides and they were both so knowledgeable, funny and kind. We saw whales. Dolphins and even sea turtles. I would recommend this tour to anyone and would definitely do it again next time I am on the island."

How the Makai Trip Runs
Park near Māla, find the crew under the tree, two hours on the water.
Park near Māla Boat Ramp
Public parking near the ramp is first come, first served, so leave time to find a space. The ramp sits about a mile north of Lahaina town.
Check in 15 minutes early
Find the crew under the tree on the ocean side of the trailer parking lot at least 15 minutes before departure. The listing treats late check-ins as no-shows, with no refund.
Two hours with the whales
Everyone gets a cushioned seat with open viewing, and the boat has an onboard bathroom and plenty of shade. The listing asks for moderate fitness and is not recommended for poor heart health.
Ask how the guarantee works
The listing says whale sightings are guaranteed but does not spell out what you get if none appear. Ask at check-in and keep your voucher. The trip runs 13 November 2026 to 25 April 2027.

What Each Maui Guarantee Actually Promises
The exact listing wording, free trip or refund, season limits, and what weather and late arrivals do.
On Maui, a whale-sighting guarantee nearly always means a free place on another trip if the crew finds no whales, not your money back. Among the listings we compare, only Dive Maui lets you choose between a free next trip and a refund, and Maui Whale Adventures promises money back. A free re-ride is useful only if you have another day on Maui inside that operator’s season, so book early in your stay. Weather cancellations fall under the normal cancellation policy, and no guarantee covers how close the whales come or what they do. Wording below is quoted from each listing, checked October 2026; where a listing gives no terms, we say so.
What each listing promises
We earn a commission if you book through our links, at no extra cost to you.
| Tour | Departure | Boat, length | Wording in the listing | If no whales | Drawback | From |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Makai Adventures | Māla Boat Ramp | Fast boat, 2 h | “Whale Sightings Guaranteed!” | Not stated: check the listing | Late check-in counts as a no-show | $109 per person |
| Dive Maui | Māla Boat Ramp | Raft, 2 h | “see whales or your next trip is free (or your money back, your choice)” | Free trip or refund | No children under 3 | $81 per person |
| Pacific Whale Foundation | Māʻalaea | 2 h | “whale sightings are guaranteed on all whale watches or you go again for free” | Another trip | 45-minute check-in | $100 per person |
| Ultimate Whale Watch | Māla Boat Ramp | Raft, about 2 h | “All trips from December – April are guaranteed to see whales or you go again for FREE!” | Another trip, December to April | No pregnant guests | $77 per person |
| Teralani | Kāʻanapali Beach | Catamaran, 2 h | “See guaranteed whale sightings or go again free” | Another trip | 2 days’ notice to cancel | $113 per person |
| Redline Rafting | Kīhei Boat Ramp | Raft, 1.5 h | “Guaranteed to see Whales” | Not stated: check the listing | Season ends 31 Mar | $100 per person |
| Alii Nui | Māʻalaea | 65-ft catamaran, 2 h | “Guaranteed humpback whale sightings on every charter” | Not stated: check the listing | Restroom down a ladder | $139 per person |
| Maui Ocean Adventures sunrise | Māla Boat Ramp | Small boat, 2 h | “Guaranteed whale sightings.” | Not stated: check the listing | No restrooms | $70 per person |
| Quicksilver | Māʻalaea | Power catamaran, 2 h | No guarantee in the listing | Nothing promised | Larger shared boat | $50 per person |
| Maui Plane Rides | Airfield (directions in the listing) | Private plane, 1 h | “No Guarantees!” | Nothing promised | Full mobility required | $420 per person |
Other listings in our data carry their own wording. Pacific Whale Foundation’s Lahaina sail lets you go again “at your convenience within one year of your cruise”, and its deluxe Māʻalaea sail on GetYourGuide offers “another whale watch of equal or lesser value within one year”. Maui Adventure Cruises offers to take you “on our next available whale watch”. Maui Whale Adventures says sightings are guaranteed “or your money back”. Teralani’s premium whale watch sends you on “any classic whale watch”.
The same boat can carry different promises
Wording can differ between the two booking sites for the same trip. Hawaii Ocean Rafting’s Viator listing says “Up close sightings not guaranteed”, while its GetYourGuide listing promises “Guaranteed whale sightings from December 1 - April 15”. The Kaulana from Lahaina Harbor shows no guarantee on Viator, but its GetYourGuide listing says “if you don’t spot a whale, you can go again for free”. The Kaulana’s Viator listing is the one we review. If the guarantee matters to you, read the listing you actually book, and screenshot it.
A free re-ride needs another day in season
Whale season runs roughly November to May, with the peak from January to March, and numbers fall steeply by late March. Each operator’s own window is shorter. Redline’s bookable dates end on 31 March 2027, Pacific Whale Foundation’s Māʻalaea trip on 15 April, Maui Ocean Adventures’ on 20 April and Makai’s on 25 April. Ultimate Whale Watch and Dive Maui limit their guarantees to December through April. A go-again-free promise on your last day before flying home is worth nothing, so take the trip in the first half of your stay. Our April guide covers which guarantees lapse at the end of the season.
What a guarantee does not cover
Weather is the big exception. If the operator cancels for wind or sea state, that is a cancellation, handled by the trip’s cancellation policy, usually as a refund or a new date. Two GetYourGuide listings in our data spell it out: Dive Maui’s and Malolo’s say that if a trip is cancelled for poor weather you will be offered a different date or a full refund. Cancelling yourself follows the normal rule, which on these listings ranges from 24 hours to 2 days before departure.
Late arrival is not covered either. Makai treats late check-ins as no-shows with no refund, and Hawaii Ocean Rafting says there are no refunds for late arrivals. Close encounters are never part of the deal. Federal rules bar every vessel, raft and paddleboard from approaching within 100 yards of a humpback, so a guarantee is about seeing whales, not about how near they come or whether one breaches.
How a sighting is defined, and how to claim
None of the listings we read defines a sighting, so a single distant blow may count. Ask at check-in how the crew decides, and if no whales appear, raise it with the crew before you leave the boat and keep your voucher. The listings do not describe a claim process beyond the wording quoted above, so check the listing and your confirmation email for any time limit. Pacific Whale Foundation’s Lahaina sail gives one year.
Which guarantee to choose
If you may not get another day on the water, Dive Maui’s choice of a refund is the strongest promise we found on a paged tour; see our Dive Maui review. If you are on Maui for a week or more, a go-again-free promise from Pacific Whale Foundation, Ultimate Whale Watch, Teralani or Makai works well, especially early in the trip. Makai is our featured pick for its high rating and comfortable boat, and our Makai review covers it in full. Compare all the rafts on the raft tours page, the West Maui departures on the Lahaina page, or every boat type on the best Maui whale watching tours page.

Whale Sighting Guarantees: Questions
No-whale trips, refunds, weather cancellations, season limits and how to claim.
It depends on the listing. Most guarantees give you a free seat on another trip: Pacific Whale Foundation, Ultimate Whale Watch and Teralani all say you go again free. Dive Maui lets you choose a free next trip or your money back. Some listings, including Makai, Redline and Alii Nui, say sightings are guaranteed without stating the remedy, and Quicksilver's listing promises nothing. Compare the guarantees.
In the peak months most trips do, and many operators back their trips with a guarantee, but nothing is certain with wild animals. Whale season runs roughly November to May, peaks from January to March and drops steeply by late March, so trips at the edges of the season are the most likely to come back empty. No tour can promise a breach or a close approach. Best time to go.
Among the tours on this site, Makai Adventures, Dive Maui, Pacific Whale Foundation, Ultimate Whale Watch, Teralani, Redline Rafting, Alii Nui and Maui Ocean Adventures all mention a sighting guarantee in their listings. Hawaii Ocean Rafting and the Kaulana show one on GetYourGuide but not on Viator. Quicksilver's listing has none, and Maui Plane Rides says plainly that there are no guarantees. Our Makai review.
None of the listings we read defines it. A guarantee is about seeing whales, so a distant blow or a tail on the horizon may count, even if no whale comes near the boat. Federal rules bar every vessel from approaching within 100 yards of a humpback, so a guarantee can never cover a close encounter. Ask the crew at check-in how they decide, and raise any claim before you leave the boat.
A weather cancellation is not a guarantee claim. It falls under the trip's cancellation terms, which usually means a refund or a new date. The GetYourGuide listings for Dive Maui and Malolo say that if the trip is cancelled for poor weather you will be offered a different date or a full refund. Several big boats, including Quicksilver and Malolo, say they operate in most weather, so dress for spray and wind.
Usually a free repeat trip, not a refund. Dive Maui is the only tour on this site whose listing offers a choice of a free next trip or your money back. Maui Whale Adventures' Kāʻanapali raft listing also says money back. Pacific Whale Foundation, Ultimate Whale Watch, Teralani and Maui Adventure Cruises offer another trip. Cancelling yourself follows the normal policy, 24 hours to 2 days ahead on these listings. Dive Maui review.
No. Ultimate Whale Watch and Dive Maui limit their guarantees to December through April, and Hawaii Ocean Rafting's GetYourGuide listing to 1 December to 15 April. Outside those dates Hawaii Ocean Rafting runs dolphin trips where sightings are not guaranteed. Each operator's season also ends at a different date, from 31 March for Redline to 25 April for Makai. April whale watching.
The listings do not describe a formal claim process, so speak to the crew before you leave the boat and keep your voucher and booking confirmation. Ask how to rebook and whether there is a deadline: Pacific Whale Foundation's Lahaina sail allows a year, and its deluxe sail offers another whale watch of equal or lesser value within a year. Rebook as early in your stay as you can.
