How the Quicksilver Trip Runs
Park at the Māʻalaea harbor shops, check in at Boss Frog's, then two hours on the water.
Park at Maui Harbor Shops
The listing asks passengers to park at Maui Harbor Shops, 300 Māʻalaea Road. Harbor parking is paid, so allow time to pay at the machine or by QR code before you unload the stroller.
Check in 30 minutes early
Check-in is mandatory 30 minutes before departure at Boss Frog's, Building 2, Shop 2N. A crew member waits outside to check you in. Children must be with an adult.
Two hours on the catamaran
The crew narrates, lowers a hydrophone so children can hear whale song, and serves sodas and juice. There are two restrooms and a shaded cabin for naps or a break from the sun.
Back at Māʻalaea
You return to the same harbor. Tips are optional and the crew asks for cash. If plans change, the listing needs 24 hours' notice to cancel or reschedule.

Which Maui Boat Suits Your Child's Age
Each listing's minimum age, plus restrooms, shade, naps and seasickness.
For babies and toddlers, book a two-hour trip on a big boat with a restroom, a shaded cabin and no minimum age: Quicksilver, Malolo or Pacific Whale Foundation from Māʻalaea Harbor, or the Kaulana from Lahaina Harbor. Rafts work once your child meets the age rule. The three West Maui rafts on this site take no children under 3, Maui Adventure Cruises sets its minimum at 5 and Redline Rafting at 8. Every rule below is copied from the operator’s own listing, checked October 2026.

Babies and toddlers: stay on the big boats
Under 3, the rafts are off the table, so the choice is between the large boats. Quicksilver and Malolo both list two restrooms and a shady cabin and allow prams or strollers, which matters when a toddler falls asleep halfway through. The Kaulana from Lahaina Harbor allows strollers too, and its listing says infants sit on an adult’s lap. Pacific Whale Foundation lets children 4 and under ride free, but each child must still be entered on the booking for the boat’s manifest, so do not leave them off to save a step.
Life jackets are worth asking about before you book. Hawaii Ocean Rafting says its life jackets are for emergencies and are not required to be worn during the tour, and the other listings do not say what sizes they carry. One Ultimate Whale Watch reviewer suggested bringing your own life jacket for small children, for peace of mind. Call the operator if you need an infant size.
Ages 3 to 7: rafts open up, with conditions
From age 3, the West Maui rafts become possible: Ultimate Whale Watch, Dive Maui and Hawaii Ocean Rafting all set 3 as the minimum, and so does Maui Ocean Adventures’ small pink boat. Maui Adventure Cruises’ super raft from Lahaina Harbor waits until 5. Rafts sit low to the water, so expect spray, and Hawaii Ocean Rafting tells guests to plan to get wet. Shade is limited and most raft listings mention no restroom, which makes two hours a long stretch for a four-year-old. If that worries you, Maui Adventure Cruises and Makai Adventures both list an onboard restroom and shade, and Makai’s boat gives everyone a cushioned seat. Our raft tour comparison covers the ride itself.
Ages 8 and up: every boat is open
Redline Rafting’s Kīhei trip is the strictest on our list: 8 is the minimum age and 65 the maximum recommended, so it is a good fit for older children and teenagers, less so for a grandparent along for the day. It runs 1.5 hours, with 7, 9 and 11 a.m. departures. For children who swim, Pride of Maui pairs a whale watch with a turtle snorkel on a boat with a water slide and warm showers, but it lasts 3.5 hours and runs only 1 January to 1 April 2027.
Trip length, naps and time away from the hotel
Most whale watches are two hours on the water, but check-in adds 15 to 45 minutes and the drive adds more. Kāʻanapali to Māʻalaea is 18.5 miles, about 35 minutes without traffic, on the only road out of West Maui. A two-hour Pacific Whale Foundation trip from a Kāʻanapali hotel therefore takes close to four hours door to door once you add the 45-minute check-in, the drive each way and parking (our arithmetic). Kāʻanapali families who want to skip the drive can board Sea Maui from the beach; our Kāʻanapali page explains the wet beach boarding.
Pick a departure that does not clash with nap time. Mornings are usually calmer on Maui’s leeward coast, and the wind usually builds after late morning, which is why we lean towards morning trips with small children; the morning or afternoon guide has the detail. The Malolo trip is sold on GetYourGuide as an afternoon whale watch if your child naps in the morning.
Seasickness and children
The CDC notes that motion sickness is more common in children aged 2 to 12, and suggests asking a doctor whether to give a child a test dose of medicine before travel. Never sedate a child with antihistamines on your own judgment. On board, have them look at the horizon, keep them out of the bow, and offer small snacks often. Our seasickness guide explains how boat type affects the ride.
Keeping children interested
Two hours of empty ocean can feel long, so a hydrophone helps. Quicksilver, Malolo, the Kaulana, Pacific Whale Foundation, Dive Maui and Hawaii Ocean Rafting all lower one so children can hear male humpbacks sing. The GetYourGuide listing of the same Pacific Whale Foundation trip mentions a Jr. Naturalist program for kids. Sightings still vary: whale season runs roughly November to May, peaking January to March, and no boat can promise a breach.
Our pick for families
With a baby or toddler, choose Quicksilver for price and facilities, or the Kaulana if you are staying in West Maui; read our Quicksilver review first. With children under 5, Pacific Whale Foundation’s free seats add up (our review). From age 3, Dive Maui’s raft adds a sighting guarantee, and from 8, Redline is open. For the full ranking by traveler type, see the best Maui whale watching tours, or compare big boats on the catamaran page.

Whale Watching With Kids: Questions
Ages, babies, rafts, life jackets, restrooms and keeping children interested.
It depends on the boat. Quicksilver, Malolo, Pacific Whale Foundation and the Kaulana list no minimum age. The West Maui rafts run by Ultimate Whale Watch, Dive Maui and Hawaii Ocean Rafting take children from 3, as does Maui Ocean Adventures. Maui Adventure Cruises starts at 5 and Redline Rafting at 8. Compare the age rules.
Yes, on the larger boats. Quicksilver and Malolo from Māʻalaea both list two restrooms, a shady cabin and room for prams or strollers, and the Kaulana from Lahaina Harbor allows strollers too. Rafts are not an option for toddlers under 3. Choose a morning departure if you can, because the water on Maui's leeward coast is usually calmer before the wind builds. Our Quicksilver review.
Most children enjoy it, especially on boats with a hydrophone, which lets them hear male humpbacks singing under the boat. Quicksilver, Malolo, the Kaulana, Pacific Whale Foundation, Dive Maui and Hawaii Ocean Rafting all list one. Go in season (roughly November to May, peaking January to March), keep the trip to two hours, and remember that no boat can promise a breach. Best tours by traveler type.
Yes, on boats without an age limit. The Kaulana's listing says infants sit on an adult's lap, and Quicksilver and Malolo allow prams. Pacific Whale Foundation lets children 4 and under ride free, but they must still be entered on the booking for the boat's manifest. Hawaii Ocean Rafting says no infants, and the West Maui rafts set the minimum at 3. Ask the operator about infant life jackets.
For young children, a catamaran. The big boats have restrooms, shaded cabins and room to move, and they take children of any age. Rafts sit low to the water, so the ride is wetter and bumpier, shade is limited and most raft listings mention no restroom. They suit children 3 and older (8 and older on Redline) who like spray and can sit still for up to two hours. Raft tours compared.
The listings say little about this. Hawaii Ocean Rafting says life jackets are provided for emergencies but are not required to be worn during the tour, and the other whale-watch listings do not mention child sizes. One Ultimate Whale Watch reviewer suggested bringing your own life jacket for small children, for peace of mind. If you need an infant or toddler size, call the operator before you book.
Some do, so keep it short. Most trips are two hours on the water, and Redline's raft is 1.5 hours. A hydrophone helps a lot, and the GetYourGuide listing of Pacific Whale Foundation's Māʻalaea trip mentions a Jr. Naturalist program for kids. Pack snacks and binoculars, and avoid longer combination trips such as Pride of Maui's 3.5-hour whale watch and snorkel with very young children.
On the big boats, yes. Quicksilver and Malolo list two restrooms, a shady cabin and sodas and juice. The Kaulana has a marine restroom and lets you bring your own snacks and drinks. Pride of Maui has two restrooms and includes lunch. Maui Ocean Adventures says there are no restrooms on board, and most raft listings mention none, so plan a stop before check-in.
