"Chase and his crew were amazing. Made sure we knew the history of the places we visited, the ride along the way was fun, and all our equipment was operational. The music was great along the way as well. Lunch was good, sandwiches, homemade cookies, hawaiian chips, and sodas. Overall because of t"

How the Redline Morning Runs
Park free at the Kīhei ramp, ride out early, snorkel two sites, return by midday.
Check in at 6:30 a.m.
Parking is free in the lots above the boat and trailer area at Kīhei Boat Ramp. Look for the big red boat, and arrive by 6:30 a.m. for the 7 a.m. departure.
Ride out to the crater
The raft runs out to Molokini, about 3 miles off Maui's southwest coast. The ride is lively, so the listing does not recommend it for anyone prone to seasickness, pregnant or with spinal injuries.
Snorkel the crater reef
Molokini is a Marine Life Conservation District, so no feeding fish and no touching or taking anything. Redline says visibility often exceeds 180 feet. You climb a vertical ladder to get back aboard.
Turtle Town and lunch
The second stop is Turtle Town for green sea turtles; keep 10 feet away. Breakfast is cinnamon rolls and fruit, lunch is a deli spread, and the trip runs about five hours in all.

Molokini Crater
Which Boat to Take to Molokini
Raft or catamaran, Kīhei or Māʻalaea, who each suits and what happens when the crater is too rough.
For Molokini, the choice is a raft from Kīhei or a big boat from Māʻalaea. Redline Rafting’s Molokini Crater + South Maui Coast Adventure suits fit snorkelers aged 8 to 65 staying in Kīhei or Wailea, who can climb a vertical ladder back aboard and do not get seasick. Calypso’s Molokini Snorkeling Adventure and Maui Classic Charters’ Four Winds Molokini Snorkeling Tour suit families, nervous swimmers and anyone with limited mobility: more deck, more shade, flotation gear and easier ways in and out of the water. Every trip leaves early, and every operator treats the crater as weather-permitting.
What Molokini is
Molokini is a crescent-shaped islet about 3 miles off Maui’s southwest coast, in the ʻAlalākeiki Channel. It is the southern rim of an extinct volcanic crater, and the shallow inner cove is the crater’s submerged floor. The cove slopes to about 100 feet before dropping off, and the back wall falls to more than 200 feet. You can reach it only by boat.
The State made it the Molokini Shoal Marine Life Conservation District in 1977, covering about 77 acres. The rules are simple: no taking or injuring marine life, no feeding fish, no taking sand, coral or rock, and no landing on the islet, which is a state seabird sanctuary. Boats tie up to day-use moorings, and DLNR limits Molokini commercial use permits to 40. For the wider snorkel picture, including Turtle Town by kayak, see our Maui snorkeling tours page.

Prices are per person, from the listings as checked October 2026.
A raft is smaller and lower to the water, and the ride can be bumpy. Redline asks guests to be between 8 and 65, not pregnant and free of spinal problems, and to climb a vertical ladder after each snorkel. A big catamaran gives you more deck, more shade and room to sit out a stop; Calypso’s GetYourGuide listing counts three restrooms and 11 sets of stairs into the water. South Maui guests are close to Kīhei Boat Ramp, about 6 minutes from Wailea. West Maui guests should go to Māʻalaea: it is 18.5 miles from Kāʻanapali, about 35 minutes without traffic, on Honoapiʻilani Highway, the only road out of West Maui.
Redline: the featured raft
Redline’s trip checks in at 6:30 a.m. at Kīhei Boat Ramp for a 7 a.m. departure, with free parking in the lots above the boat and trailer area. A local guide and instructor, snorkel gear, cinnamon rolls and fruit for breakfast, a deli lunch, sodas and water are included. After Molokini it heads to Turtle Town. It is rated 5.0 from 1,649 reviews and costs from $232 per person, the highest fare of the three main options here. The listing says it is not for the elderly or fragile, so take that at face value. Our review has the full breakdown.
Calypso: the triple-deck catamaran
Calypso calls its boat Maui’s only triple-decker catamaran. It has a jumping platform, two slides and a glass-bottom viewing room for anyone who wants to stay dry, plus snorkel gear and flotation devices. Breakfast, lunch, coffee, tea, sodas and juice are included, and alcohol is sold for $3 a drink once the snorkeling is done. Check-in is 6:45 a.m. for a 7:30 a.m. departure from Slips 76 to 78 at Māʻalaea. The listing is marked wheelchair accessible for manual chairs up to 28 inches wide. It is rated 4.6 from 2,230 reviews and costs from $189. The captains choose the snorkel sites each day. Our review has more.
Four Winds: gear for beginners
Four Winds leaves from Slip 80 on the ocean side of Māʻalaea Harbor. Its listing is the most beginner-minded of the three: optical masks, flotation belts for adults, life vests for young children, boogie boards and large sea boards with clear bottoms. A tropical breakfast and lunch are included, with water, soda, beer, wine and juice. SNUBA, photos and wetsuits cost extra. It is rated 4.7 from 862 reviews and costs from $213. Our review covers it in detail.
Early starts and the weather call
Molokini trips leave early because the water is usually calmer before the afternoon wind builds. Check-in runs from 5:45 a.m. on Malolo to 7:30 a.m. on Pride of Maui’s Molokini and Turtle Town trip, so plan breakfast and parking the night before. Māʻalaea parking is paid by kiosk or QR code.
No operator guarantees the crater. Four Winds says snorkeling at Molokini is “weather permitting” and it “can never guarantee a snorkel location”. Calypso’s captains set the sites daily by weather and swell, and Pride of Maui may switch to another Maui site on windy or high-swell days. One Four Winds reviewer was moved to Turtle Town by weather and still had a good day. If the crater matters, book early in your stay so a rough morning leaves time to try again.
Molokini in whale season
From December to April, the channel crossing passes humpback waters, and Calypso’s and Malolo’s GetYourGuide itineraries list whale watching on the way out and back. That is a bonus, not a whale watch: boats keep at least 100 yards from whales and the snorkel schedule comes first. If you want whales explained, with a naturalist and a hydrophone, book a dedicated trip from our best Maui whale watching tours, or a raft from our raft tours page. If seasickness worries you, read our seasickness guide before choosing the raft.

Molokini Crater: Questions
Whether it is worth it, safety, sharks, depth, getting there and whales in winter.
For most snorkelers, yes. It is a protected Marine Life Conservation District, reachable only by boat, and the listings describe clear water and abundant reef fish; Redline says visibility often exceeds 180 feet. The catch is that the crater is weather-permitting on every trip, the start is early, and the half day costs from $160 to $232 on the boats we compare. The comparison.
If you are a confident swimmer, usually yes, and the boats make it easy: gear, flotation, breakfast and lunch are included on Redline, Calypso and Four Winds. Beginners can still go: Four Winds lends sea boards and flotation belts for beginners. If you only want turtles, a shorter Turtle Town trip from Mākena may suit you better. Turtle Town and other snorkel trips.
Not on a calm day with a guided boat, but it is open ocean. Operators decide each morning whether conditions allow a visit, and Four Winds says it can never guarantee the snorkel location. The raft trips ask for moderate fitness and a vertical ladder climb back aboard, and Redline is not recommended for people prone to seasickness. Swim within your ability and use the flotation offered. Seasickness tips.
Operators say so. Calypso's listing names sharks among the marine life at the crater, alongside fish, sea urchins, manta rays and coral, and Malolo's describes harmless sharks. Molokini is a protected conservation district, so marine life is left undisturbed, and the rules ban feeding fish and taking anything from the reef. Follow the crew's briefing and keep your distance from any wildlife. Our Calypso review.
Molokini is a crescent-shaped islet about 3 miles off Maui's southwest coast, in the ʻAlalākeiki Channel. Boats reach it from Kīhei Boat Ramp in South Maui and from Māʻalaea Harbor. Landing on the islet is prohibited, because it is a state seabird sanctuary; you snorkel in the water off its inner cove. Kīhei departures.
It is the southern rim of an extinct volcanic crater. The shallow inner cove is the crater's submerged floor, which is why it shelters a reef that snorkel boats visit every day the weather allows. The State protected it in 1977 as the Molokini Shoal Marine Life Conservation District, about 77 acres, and limits commercial use permits.
The inner cove slopes to about 100 feet before dropping off, according to DLNR, and the back wall falls to more than 200 feet. Snorkelers stay at the surface over the reef, and boats tie up to day-use moorings, since anchoring is banned where moorings exist. Four Winds sells a guided SNUBA experience on board as an extra, with limited availability. Our Four Winds review.
By tour boat only. From South Maui, rafts leave Kīhei Boat Ramp, about 6 minutes from Wailea. From Māʻalaea Harbor, larger boats such as Calypso, Four Winds, Pride of Maui and Malolo leave early in the morning. From Kāʻanapali or Lahaina, drive to Māʻalaea: about 35 minutes from Kāʻanapali without traffic, more at rush hour. Māʻalaea harbor guide.
It depends on the boat and the harbor. Molokini is about 3 miles offshore. Maui Reef Adventures says its super raft reaches the crater from Māʻalaea in less than 30 minutes, while Malolo's and Calypso's GetYourGuide itineraries allow about an hour on the channel, with breakfast served on the way. Check-in times on these trips run from 5:45 to 7:30 a.m.
Often, from December to April, because the crossing passes humpback waters; Calypso's and Malolo's GetYourGuide itineraries list whale watching on the channel. It is a bonus, not a whale watch. Boats stay at least 100 yards from whales, snorkelers never swim with them, and the snorkel schedule comes first. For a full whale watch, book one separately. Best whale watching tours.
