About Maui Whale Watching Cruise
Maui Whale Watching Cruise is an independent guide to choosing and booking a whale-watching cruise on Maui: which boat, from which harbor, for which kind of traveller. We are not a tour operator, a booking agent or the Pacific Whale Foundation, Quicksilver or any other company whose trips we cover. Tours are booked on Viator or GetYourGuide, and hotels through Stay22.
Why the site exists
Most whale-watch listings look alike. The differences that change your morning sit in the small print: whether the boat leaves from Māʻalaea, Kāʻanapali, Māla or Kīhei, whether you board from a pier or from the sand, who is allowed on a raft, and when each operator’s season starts and stops. We put those details side by side so you can pick quickly and book on the platform you prefer.
How we select and compare tours
We start from every whale-watch listing we can find for Maui on Viator and GetYourGuide, then compare them on the same criteria:
- Departure point: the real meeting point from the listing, which is not always the place in the title.
- Boat type: large catamaran, sailing catamaran, raft or small boat, and what that means for shade, restrooms and spray.
- Group size: the capacity or guest cap the listing states, where it states one.
- Verified listing data: price, duration, inclusions and exclusions, checked against the live listing.
- Reviews: the rating and review count on each platform, rounded to one decimal, read together. A 5.0 from 20 reviews and a 4.8 from 1,000 tell you different things.
- Season window: the dates each operator actually sells whale watches, against the humpback season described by NOAA’s Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary.
- Restrictions: minimum ages, pregnancy, back or neck injuries, mobility and boarding conditions.
Where the same trip is sold on both platforms, we say so and show both prices, instead of presenting it as two different tours.
What we have and have not done
We have not personally taken every tour on this site, and we do not pretend to have. Our comparisons are based on the operators’ published listings, the booking platforms’ data and published traveller reviews. For rules, harbor access and safety we rely on official sources such as NOAA, NOAA Fisheries, Hawaiʻi DLNR and the County of Maui.
Prices, schedules and ratings were checked in October 2026. They change often, sometimes daily, so the price and conditions at checkout on Viator or GetYourGuide are the ones that count.
Editorial policy
- Commissions never decide a pick. We earn a commission when you book through our links (see the affiliate disclosure), but a tour is recommended because it fits a traveller’s situation, not because of what it pays. When a trip is sold on both platforms, we show both.
- We give reasons to skip a tour as well as reasons to book it.
- We do not promise whale sightings, breaches or close approaches. Every vessel must stay at least 100 yards from humpback whales, and no tour can guarantee what wild animals do.
- We write about Lahaina factually and with respect for a community still rebuilding after the August 2023 wildfire, and only where it affects your trip.
