How the Private Air Tour Runs

Book with each passenger's weight, arrive at your booked time, fly for an hour.

  1. Book with passenger weights

The listing allows up to 5 people per booking and asks for the accurate weight of each passenger in pounds. The price is per person, so check the listing for any minimum group size before you pay.

  2. Arrive at your booked time

No early check-in is needed. Enter “Maui Plane Rides” or Eena Street in your GPS, follow the signs, take the first left after the tall control tower and park.

  3. One hour in the air

Your group has the cabin to itself, with headsets so you can hear the pilot's commentary, and beverages are included. Federal rules keep manned aircraft at least 1,000 feet from humpback whales.

  4. Know the limits

Flights run only from 15 December to 15 April. The listing says plainly there are no sighting guarantees, and full mobility is required to board.

Small-group alternatives

Small Boats That Cost Far Less Than a Charter

A six-guest boat you can fill yourself, a 12-guest VIP raft, a small-group raft from Lahaina and a 20-guest raft from Kīhei.

Private whale watching

Every Private Charter Listed, and What It Costs

Six private boats, a private flight and a private paddle, what each costs per head, and when a small group is better value.

Private whale watching on Maui costs from $1,495 for a boat of up to six. That is Alii Nui’s private yacht from Māʻalaea, and it is the lowest price among the six private boat charters listed on Viator and GetYourGuide. Two other boats are sold as whale-watching charters: Hawaii Nautical’s Amore from Māʻalaea at $1,795, and the 50-foot Sanity from Kāʻanapali Beach at $1,993 for a larger party. All three have very few reviews, between none and two. The best-reviewed private option is not a boat at all: Maui Plane Rides’ one-hour air tour for two to five people, rated 5.0 from 63 reviews. For couples and most families, a 6- or 12-guest small group is still far cheaper.

The boat charters are priced per group; the air tour and paddleboard trip are priced per person. For comparison, buying all six seats on Hawaii Nautical’s shared six-guest whale watch costs $1,674 (our arithmetic).

Alii Nui’s private yacht from Māʻalaea

The Alii Nui private yacht is the lowest-priced private boat and the only one sold on both Viator and GetYourGuide, at $1,495 per group of up to six on each (GetYourGuide listing). The 2-hour option is the one pitched at whale season; a 2-hour sunset charter is $1,895, three hours $2,295 and five hours $3,895. The boat is a 37-foot Boston Whaler with a captain and crew, snorkel gear, a freshwater shower, a private restroom, shade, Bluetooth audio and a stocked cooler, and you may bring your own drinks. Check-in is at slip 74 on the Oceanside Pier in Māʻalaea Harbor. A full boat of six works out at about $249 each for two hours (our arithmetic). It is new: neither listing had a review when we checked.

Hawaii Nautical’s Amore as a private charter

Hawaii Nautical sells the same boat two ways. Its six-guest whale watch is a shared trip at $279 per person; its private charter on Amore costs from $1,795 for two hours for up to six, with longer options up to six hours. The private version names whale watching in season as one itinerary choice, alongside snorkeling, sightseeing and fishing, and adds alcoholic drinks, snacks, a stipend at the Māʻalaea General Store, an air-conditioned cabin and a restroom. For six people the charter costs $121 more than buying all six shared seats (our arithmetic), and in return the itinerary and the date are yours rather than subject to six seats being free. The charter has one review so far.

The Sanity charter from Kāʻanapali

The Sanity charter from Kaanapali Ocean Adventures is the only private boat built entirely around whale watching, and the only one from Kāʻanapali Beach. Two hours cost from $1,993 per group, three hours $2,850, and options run to six hours. Viator takes up to 15 people per booking; the operator says the 50-foot boat carries a larger party on a private charter, so call for more. Fifteen people would pay about $133 each for two hours (our arithmetic). Check-in is on the sand between Leilani’s on the Beach and the Westin, 30 minutes before departure, and guests climb into a small inflatable from the beach to reach the boat, so it does not suit anyone who cannot manage that step. Ages 5 and up; water, juice and soda are included and you may bring your own drinks. The whale option runs 15 December to 15 May. The listing text is old (it still quotes a 2017–18 season), though Viator’s live schedule shows 2026–27 dates, and it has two reviews.

Alii Nui’s private Boston Whaler from Kīhei

The Alii Nui charter from Kīhei is the South Maui choice. The Boston Whaler Alii Nani leaves Kīhei Boat Ramp for three hours with a captain and crew, and the itinerary is yours: whale watching in season, snorkeling, fishing or cruising. The listing names access to Molokini Crater, Kāʻanapali Beach and Honolua Bay, and includes snorkel gear, a freshwater shower, a private bathroom, shade, a Bluetooth stereo, water and sodas; catering can be arranged with notice. It costs from $2,476 for up to six, about $413 each for a full boat (our arithmetic), and has three reviews. The same company’s shared Alii Nui Premier Whale Watch costs $139 per person.

Two charters that are really snorkel trips

Two more private boats are listed, but neither is sold for whales. Ultimate Whale Watch’s private luxury charter is the only private boat from Lahaina, leaving Māla Boat Ramp for four hours on a 27-foot boat for up to six, from $2,370; the only option listed is a “summer” snorkel charter, though the listing notes that whale watching runs December to April, so ask before booking it for whales. Maui Reef Adventures’ Reef Explorer super raft is a three-hour private snorkel trip from Māʻalaea to Coral Gardens or Molokini, from $2,867, for up to 15 booked online and up to 25 on request. With 21 reviews, all five stars, it has more feedback than any other private boat, but the listing does not mention whales.

The private air tour

Of all the private listings, Maui Plane Rides has by far the most reviews: 5.0 from 63 on Viator. Your group of two to five has the cabin to itself for an hour, with headsets, live commentary and beverages, and landing and fuel fees are included. At $420 per person, two people pay $840 and a full cabin of five pays $2,100 (our arithmetic). Federal rules keep manned aircraft at least 1,000 feet from humpbacks, so expect a wide view of the channels, not a close look, and the listing says there are no guarantees. Flights run 15 December to 15 April, and every passenger’s weight is needed at booking. Read our air tour review.

The private paddleboard whale watch

Paddle On! Maui’s private SUP whale watch is private for your family or group and pitched at all skill levels, though the listing asks for moderate fitness and is not recommended for spinal injuries. The meeting point is confirmed by phone the night before. The 100-yard approach rule covers paddleboards exactly as it covers boats, so you will not paddle up to whales. At $189 per person, a family of four pays $756 (our arithmetic), and it has nine reviews.

What going private changes, and what it does not

A private trip buys control. You choose the length, the stops, the music and the drinks, and on most charters you can split the time between whales and a snorkel. On the air tour nobody else is in the cabin, so everyone gets a window. What it cannot change is the rules or the whales. Every boat, raft and paddleboard has to stay outside 100 yards, every aircraft outside 1,000 feet, and whales are only here in numbers from roughly November to May, peaking January to March. Weather can still cancel a private departure, just as it can a shared one.

When a small group is the better value

For two people, a private boat rarely makes sense. Two seats on Ultimate Whale Watch’s 12-guest VIP raft cost $250, two on Hawaii Nautical’s shared boat $558 and two on the air tour $840, against $1,495 for the cheapest private boat (our arithmetic). A family of four pays $500 on the VIP raft and $1,116 on Hawaii Nautical. The sums turn at six: six shared seats on Hawaii Nautical cost $1,674, more than Alii Nui’s private yacht at $1,495, while for five people the shared seats are still cheaper at $1,395. A large party is where Sanity pays off, at about $133 each for 15. Read our VIP review, and compare more options on the small-group page and the price comparison.

Which harbors have private options

Māʻalaea has the most: Alii Nui’s private yacht, Hawaii Nautical’s Amore and the Reef Explorer raft. Kāʻanapali Beach has the Sanity, Kīhei Boat Ramp has Alii Nui’s Alii Nani, and Māla Boat Ramp in Lahaina has Ultimate Whale Watch’s private boat. We found no private charter listed from Lahaina Harbor itself. Our Māʻalaea page, Kāʻanapali page and Kīhei page cover those departure points, and the best Maui whale watching tours page ranks every boat type.
