How the VIP Raft Trip Runs
Book with a contact number, check in at Māla, two hours at sea.
Book with your phone number
The listing asks for a phone number or email on every booking so the crew can reach you if the trip changes. Viator flags this tour as likely to sell out in season.
Check in 20 minutes early
Check in at Māla Boat Yard, 1237 Front Street, Lahaina. Allow extra time for Front Street traffic and parking.
Two hours on the raft
The raft may travel 2 to 10 miles from Lahaina to find whales, and the listing says dolphins often turn up too. A marine naturalist talks you through what you see.
Guarantee and limits
Sightings are guaranteed December to April or you go again free. The raft does not take pregnant guests, children under 3, or anyone with spinal injuries or poor cardiovascular health.

What a Smaller Boat Gets You
Group caps, raft or powerboat, the health limits, and whether the higher fare pays off.
Small group whale watching on Maui means sharing the boat with 6 to about 20 people instead of a big catamaran’s crowd. The clearest caps are Hawaii Nautical’s 6 guests from Māʻalaea, the Ultimate VIP raft’s 12 from Māla in Lahaina, and Redline Rafting’s 20 from Kīhei. You pay more per seat, from $77 to $279 against $50 on the largest boat, and what you buy is a rail seat and a quieter deck. A small boat does not get closer to the whales.

“Not stated” means the Viator listing calls the trip small group without giving a number. Ask the operator if a cap matters to you.
The 6-guest boat: Hawaii Nautical
Hawaii Nautical’s whale watch runs on Amore, a 42-foot Boston Whaler with a SeaKeeper stabilizer, shaded seating and a bow lounger, and it takes no more than 6 guests. A captain, crew and marine naturalist come along, along with binoculars, snacks, onboard restrooms and a $10 stipend per guest at the Māʻalaea General Store, where you check in. It runs 1 December to 31 March and holds a 5.0 rating from 20 reviews, a small sample. It is a shared boat priced per person, so it is only private if you book all six seats. Book it for a small family that wants a steady boat with a restroom. Skip it if $279 a head is too much for two hours. Read our review.
The 12-guest raft: Ultimate VIP
The VIP trip uses the same inflatable rafts as the standard Ultimate Whale Watch but caps the group at 12. The rafts are modeled on Coast Guard rescue rafts, sit close to the water and move quickly between whales. A naturalist rides on every trip, and the December to April guarantee gives you a free repeat if no whales appear. Book it if you want a lively, low ride with few other people. Skip it if anyone is pregnant, under 3, or has a spinal injury or heart trouble, as the operator turns those guests away. The standard raft is $77 to $88 and does not state a cap. See our review.
Up to 20 from Kīhei: Redline Rafting
Redline’s Kīhei raft limits each trip to 20, which the listing says is smaller than most whale tours, and runs 90 minutes with a naturalist and hydrophone. Departures are at 7, 9 and 11 a.m. from Kīhei Boat Ramp, with free dirt-lot parking above the ramp. Book it if you are staying in Kīhei or Wailea and want a short, fast trip. Skip it if anyone is under 8 or over 65, pregnant, or has a bad back or neck. Its season is 13 December to 31 March. More on the Kīhei page.
Raft or small powerboat
Most of the small-group trips in our table are rafts. They sit low, move fast and give everyone a rail seat, but you will get splashed, shade is limited and few raft listings mention a restroom. They also carry the strictest health limits, because the ride can bounce. Small powerboats trade a little of that closeness for comfort. Hawaii Nautical has restrooms, shaded seating and a stabilizer. Makai Adventures promises every guest a cushioned seat, an onboard bathroom and lots of shade from Māla Boat Ramp. Maui Ocean Adventures’ pink boat, also from Māla, has 360-degree views but no restroom. If you lean toward a raft, our raft page explains the ride, and our seasickness guide covers motion.
Restrictions to check before you book
Small boats list more restrictions than the big catamarans. On the Ultimate rafts there are no children under 3, no pregnant guests and no one with spinal injuries or poor cardiovascular health. Dive Maui excludes children under 3, pregnant guests and spinal injuries. Redline’s limits are ages 8 to 65, with no pregnancy and no back or neck injuries. Makai asks for at least a moderate level of fitness. Hawaii Nautical lists itself as suitable for all fitness levels. Check-in windows are short, from 15 minutes at Makai to 30 at Redline, so allow time for parking.
Do small groups see more?
Not legally closer. Federal rules keep every vessel, raft, kayak and swimmer at least 100 yards from humpbacks in Hawaiʻi, and no boat type is exempt. If a whale swims toward a stopped boat, the crew stays put and waits. What a small group does change is the view: no one stands two rows deep at the rail, the naturalist can answer everyone’s questions, and a nimble boat can move between groups of whales quickly.
Is it worth paying more
Per seat, the jump is steep. Quicksilver’s big catamaran is from $50, the VIP raft $125 and Hawaii Nautical $279. For photographers, couples and anyone who dislikes crowds, the 12-guest raft is the best value step up. For families who need a restroom and a gentle ride, Hawaii Nautical or a larger catamaran makes more sense. Groups who want the whole boat should see private whale watching, and our prices page and ranked picks compare every tier.

Small Group Whale Watching: Questions
Group sizes, boats, cost, closeness to the whales, extras and how fast seats go.
It depends on the boat. The clearest caps on the tours we review are 6 guests on Hawaii Nautical's boat from Māʻalaea, 12 on the Ultimate VIP raft from Māla in Lahaina and 20 on Redline Rafting's raft from Kīhei. Several other listings call themselves small group without giving a number, so ask the operator if the exact size matters. The 12-guest raft.
Space and pace. On a small boat everyone has a rail seat, the naturalist can talk to each guest and the boat moves quickly between whales. A large catamaran is steadier and roomier, usually has restrooms and shade, and often costs less, from $50 on Quicksilver. Large boats also accept more ages and health conditions than most small rafts. Catamarans compared.
For photographers, couples and anyone who dislikes crowds, usually yes. The step from a $50 catamaran to the $125 VIP raft buys a guaranteed rail seat and a group of 12. The step to Hawaii Nautical at $279 buys a 6-guest boat with restrooms and a stabilizer. Families on a budget get more for their money on a larger boat. Prices by tier.
No. Federal rules in Hawaiʻi require every vessel, raft, kayak and swimmer to stay at least 100 yards from humpback whales, and no boat type is exempt. Whales sometimes swim toward a stopped boat, and then the crew waits until they move off. A small boat changes how well you see, with no crowd at the rail, not how close you are allowed to go.
Mostly inflatable or rigid rafts, plus a few small powerboats. Ultimate Whale Watch, Dive Maui and Redline use rafts that sit low and ride fast. Hawaii Nautical uses a 42-foot Boston Whaler with a stabilizer and restrooms, and Makai Adventures runs a fast boat with cushioned seats, a bathroom and shade. Maui Ocean Adventures uses a small pink boat from Māla. Raft tours.
The two-hour whale watches do not include snorkeling. Ultimate Whale Watch sells a separate 3.5-hour whale watch and snorkel trip. Drinks are simple: Ultimate gives bottled water, Dive Maui filtered water, and Hawaii Nautical snacks plus a $10 store credit per guest before departure. Hawaii Ocean Rafting lets you bring your own drinks in plastic or cans. None of these small trips lists an included bar.
They can, because there are so few seats. Viator flags both Ultimate Whale Watch trips, the standard raft and the 12-guest VIP raft, as likely to sell out, and a 6-guest boat fills with a single family. Book early for January to March, the peak months. All the small-group tours we review offer free cancellation, so an early booking is low risk. Peak season.
Most leave from Māla Boat Ramp and nearby Front Street shops in Lahaina, including Ultimate Whale Watch, Dive Maui, Makai Adventures and Maui Ocean Adventures. Hawaii Nautical checks in at the Māʻalaea General Store, and Redline Rafting launches from Kīhei Boat Ramp, about 6 minutes from Wailea. Always follow the meeting point on your voucher. Lahaina departures.
