Maui Eco-Raft Tour: Eye-Level Whale or Dolphin Watching - Lahaina

4.9 (2,859 verified reviews)

About This Experience

Hawaii Ocean Rafting sells one 2-hour raft trip with two seasonal options. In humpback season you book the whale option; in the summer months you book the dolphin option, and the listing treats November and May as edge-of-season months for whales, when the trip may mix searching with sightseeing. The option you choose at checkout decides which animals the crew looks for. The company is Native Hawaiian owned and has been rafting off West Maui for more than 30 years, and with a 4.9 average from 2,859 reviews this is the most-reviewed whale-watch listing we track.

Check-in is mandatory 30 minutes before start time at the Dive Maui shop, 1223 Front Street, next to Snorkel Bob’s, and the operator says late arrivals get no refund. Park near the Lahaina Cannery as the listing asks; the operator tells guests not to park at Māla Boat Ramp. The listing itself warns about closed roads and traffic, and Honoapiʻilani Highway is the only road into West Maui from Māʻalaea and Kīhei, so leave a margin. Check-in is on Front Street, not at Lahaina Harbor, and you need to be able to board the raft without help.

The raft sits low, so you watch at eye level and you will get wet: the listing warns of ocean spray and light rain. Shade varies by seat, snacks are included, a marine naturalist narrates, and a hydrophone lets you hear whale song in season. You may bring your own drinks in plastic or cans. Life jackets are on board for emergencies. The operator says whales often approach its small boats; that happens only when a whale chooses to, because federal rules keep rafts, like every vessel, at least 100 yards from humpbacks and 50 yards from spinner dolphins. The listing itself says up-close encounters are not guaranteed.

The standard options run from $85 to about $111 per person, depending on departure. The listing also carries a few options priced around $205 to $216 that the page does not explain, so read what each one includes before you pay. The same company sells the trip on GetYourGuide from about $97 (4.7 from 55 reviews). There are no infants, no children under 3 and no pregnant guests, and it is not for anyone with back, neck or spinal injuries. Only rub-on reef-safe sunscreen is allowed on board. Dive Maui’s raft, which meets at the same Front Street shop, is in our review, and the larger Kaulana from Lahaina Harbor is in our review.

What Travelers Say

Rated 4.9/5 by 2,859 verified Viator travelers.

This was an absolutely amazing experience! There are so many places to choose from, but we were told this one was highly recommended and we now see why. Small group, in a boat low to the water so we could easily maneuver to be safely near where the whales went — obviously keeping a distance to not in

The whole experience was awesome. The crew was very entertaining and knowledgeable. They really had to work hard to find the dolphins, but they did. They stuck around a little longer just to make sure everybody had a chance to learn about the dolphins and experience the whole venture. Highly recommend this to anyone.

Excellent trip. Saw lots of dolphins! The captain and other staff were very knowledgeable and friendly! Would definitely recommend!

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this a whale watch or a dolphin watch?

Both, depending on the season. You pick the option at checkout: the whale option runs in humpback season (roughly November to May, peaking January to March) and the dolphin option in the summer months. The listing treats November and May as edge-of-season whale months, so check which option your date offers.

Where do I check in, and does it leave from Lahaina Harbor?

Check in 30 minutes before start time at the Dive Maui shop, 1223 Front St, next to Snorkel Bob’s, and park near the Lahaina Cannery. Check-in is on Front Street, not at Lahaina Harbor. The operator tells guests not to park at Māla Boat Ramp, and late arrivals are not refunded.

How wet will I get on the raft?

Expect to get wet. The listing says it is a low-to-water boat where ocean spray and light rain can occur, and shade varies by seat. Wear quick-dry clothes, use rub-on reef-safe sunscreen (sprays are not allowed on board) and keep your phone in a zip bag.

Do whales really come close to the raft?

Sometimes, but only by their own choice. Federal rules keep every vessel, rafts included, at least 100 yards from humpbacks, and the crew stops and waits if a whale surfaces nearby. The listing itself says up-close sightings are not guaranteed, because the animals are wild.

How much does the Hawaii Ocean Rafting tour cost?

The standard options run from $85 to about $111 per person on Viator, depending on departure. The listing also shows a few options around $205 to $216 without explaining them on the page, so check what each one includes. Hawaii Ocean Rafting also sells the trip on GetYourGuide from about $97.

Can children join?

Children 3 and older can join; infants, under-3s and pregnant guests cannot. Everyone must be able to board the raft without help, and it is not suitable for back, neck or spinal injuries. Snacks may contain common allergens, so tell the crew in advance about any food allergy.
