Maui: Ka'anapali Whale Watching Cruise on Luxury Sailboat

4.8 (170 verified reviews)

About This Experience

This is Teralani’s whale watch, the one of its three Kāʻanapali sails built around the whales. Teralani also sells a sunset cocktail sail and a sunset dinner sail from the same beach, and those two focus on sailing, food and drinks. On this trip a marine naturalist talks through the humpbacks’ winter in Maui waters, and the crew lowers a hydrophone so you can hear whale song when the whales are singing.

You board straight from Kāʻanapali Beach, with no drive to a state harbor. Expect to walk through the shallows and climb a short staircase onto a spacious sailing catamaran. The food and drink match the time of day: breakfast snacks, fresh Kona coffee, tropical juices, soft drinks and pogmosas, which one reviewer describes as POG cocktails. The trip lasts about 2 hours. One April reviewer counted almost a dozen humpbacks over about an hour, with the captain keeping a respectful distance.

The listing promises guaranteed whale sightings or another trip free. Read the exact terms when you book; it is a free second trip, not a refund. GetYourGuide shows dates from early November. Whale season runs roughly November to May and peaks January to March, and whales are scarce at both ends. Reviews from March and April 2026 describe mothers with young calves, a competition pod and dolphins. One April reviewer says that during a swell the crew moved boarding to the harbor in Lahaina so the trip could still go out safely.

Reviewers praise the naturalist, the captain’s skill at finding whales and the steady supply of snacks and drinks. An onboard photographer sells pictures. The two 1-star reviews are worth knowing about: one guest wished the captain had used the hydrophone on their trip, and another felt pressured to tip. It rates 4.8 from 170 reviews, from $113 per person. Cancellation is free only up to 2 days before, which is stricter than most whale watches.

Sea Maui runs a rival two-hour whale watch from the same beach with an open bar; compare the two in our review. The listing notes the boat is not suitable for wheelchair users, since boarding is from the sand.

What Travelers Say

Rated 4.8/5 by 170 verified GetYourGuide travelers.

This tour was everything we wanted and expected - skilled, friendly, and engaging hosts, great day on the catamaran, and saw almost a dozen humpback whales over about an hour. While access to the whales isn't guaranteed, the Captain positioned us well to have the best chance and seeing them. He kept a respectable distance, but ensured a good experience for guests. Snacks and drinks were tasty and plentiful.

We had an amazing time! The entire crew was friendly and very informative about all of the marine life. We were fortunate to see whales and have a captain that was very experienced to find the little signs in the water that lead him to where the whales were. They even moved to the Lahaina harbor for loading during a swell in order to still go out to see in a safe manner. Would definitely recommend Terelani!

This was even better than we expected! Gorgeous day and we saw lots of whales. We went with a group of twelve and all of us had a spectacular time. Also great fun as you can just relax, enjoy, and be present, as there is an onboard photographer that take great pictures for a nominal fee. The naturalist, Patrick shared so much fascinating information about the whales. He was very knowledgeable! Our captain, also Patrick, had a great sense of humor and found those whales for us. Highly recommend!
