Stay in Kīhei for the shortest drive to Māʻalaea Harbor, where most Maui whale watches leave. Stay in Kāʻanapali if you would rather walk onto a catamaran from the beach. Stay in Wailea for a resort with the Kīhei Boat Ramp rafts six minutes away. Kahului, the airport town, has the closest hotels of all to Māʻalaea and the lowest rates, but no resort beach. Lahaina had one hotel open when we checked, and Māʻalaea itself has condos only. No whale watch on this site collects from hotels, so the drive from your room to the dock is part of the trip.

Māʻalaea Harbor is where Pacific Whale Foundation, Quicksilver, Alii Nui, Malolo, Pride of Maui and Hawaii Nautical leave. Māla Boat Ramp, a mile north of Lahaina, is where Ultimate Whale Watch, Makai Adventures, Hawaii Ocean Rafting and Dive Maui leave. The Kīhei Boat Ramp is Redline Rafting’s.
Kīhei: the practical base
Kīhei is a long beach town on the south coast, and it sits between the two South Maui departure points. Māʻalaea Harbor is 8.7 miles away, 15 to 20 minutes without traffic, and north Kīhei is closer still. The Kīhei Boat Ramp, where Redline Rafting has guests check in 30 minutes before the 7 a.m. raft, is about 6 minutes from the middle of town. Kahului Airport is about 30 minutes away. The trade-off is that Kāʻanapali’s beach boats and the Lahaina-side rafts are close to an hour’s drive. Most places here are mid-range hotels and condos, and the fees are lower than at the resorts.
Kohea Kai Hotel Maui (mid-range) is in north Kīhei on Māʻalaea Bay, about 6 miles from the harbor, with a pool and free parking, one space per unit. It is a 3-minute walk from the humpback whale sanctuary headquarters, and NOAA names its visitor center on South Kīhei Road as a good spot to see whales breaching from shore. Maui Coast Hotel (mid-range) is on South Kīhei Road, a 5-minute walk from Kamaʻole Beach Park, with two pools, three hot tubs and a bar; its minimum check-in age is 21. In south Kīhei, Mana Kai Maui (mid-range) sits on the beach at Keawakapu, a short drive from the boat ramp, with a restaurant and a pool. See all stays in Kīhei.
Kāʻanapali: walk to a beach-boarding boat
Kāʻanapali is the West Maui resort strip, and it has the only whale watches that leave from a beach. Sea Maui checks guests in at a kiosk between Leilani’s and Hula Grill at Whalers Village and validates 4 hours of parking, and Teralani’s catamarans also board on the sand. Māla Boat Ramp is about 3 miles south, roughly 10 minutes, and Lahaina Harbor about 13. Māʻalaea is 18.5 miles away: allow 30 to 45 minutes on Honoapiʻilani Highway, the only road out of West Maui, and more at rush hour or when roadwork closes a lane.
What beach boarding involves
You take your shoes off, wade in up to your knees and climb a ladder or steps, so wear a swimsuit and bag your phone. It is not recommended for guests with mobility issues, and winter northwest swells can affect the landing.
Hotels within a walk of Whalers Village
Aston at The Whaler on Kāʻanapali Beach (upper, condos with kitchens) is beachfront, 2 minutes on foot from Whalers Village. The Westin Maui Resort & Spa, Kāʻanapali (luxury) is also a 2-minute walk away, with a full-service spa. OUTRIGGER Kāʻanapali Beach Resort (mid-range), the former Kāʻanapali Beach Hotel, is 5 minutes from Whalers Village and is the meeting point for Teralani’s sunset dinner sail; it also has the lowest parking charge on the strip. Hyatt Regency Maui Resort & Spa (upper) has six pools and a spa, 3 minutes from Whalers Village; its minimum check-in age is 21. See all stays in Kāʻanapali.
Wailea: the resort option
Wailea is the resort district south of Kīhei, and almost everything here is luxury-priced. The Kīhei Boat Ramp is 1.9 miles away, about 6 minutes, and Māʻalaea 25 to 30 minutes. Mākena Landing, where the Turtle Town kayak and snorkel launches, is about 7 minutes south, and Molokini trips leave from the ramp and Māʻalaea. Kahului Airport is about 40 minutes away.
Wailea Beach Resort - Marriott, Maui is a minute’s walk from the Shops at Wailea, with four pools and a spa. Pacific Whale Foundation has run a whale-watch station on the Wailea Beach Path in front of this resort in past seasons; check its site for the 2026–27 schedule. Andaz Maui at Wailea Resort is on the beach, 5 minutes on foot from Mokapu Beach, with five pools; parking is valet only. Hotel Wailea Maui is adults-only (no guests under 18), inland, a 3-minute drive from Wailea Beach, with a pool, spa services and the Birdcage bar. See all stays in Wailea.
Lahaina, as of October 2026
Lahaina is rebuilding after the August 2023 wildfire, and much of the historic town is still closed and fenced. Front Street reopened to vehicles on 1 August 2026, and Lahaina Harbor reopened in a limited way in December 2025 for permitted operators, in daylight only, with no harbor activity after 6 p.m. Most of the Lahaina-side whale watches leave from Māla Boat Ramp, about a mile north of town. The County keeps current access on MauiRecovers.
The one Lahaina-town property we found on Expedia was Lahaina Shores Beach Resort (mid-range), at 475 Front Street, with beachfront studios and one-bedrooms with kitchens and onsite parking. It is about half a mile from Lahaina Harbor, where Kaulana’s whale watch boards, and about 6 minutes from Māla Boat Ramp. You will drive to most meals. Expedia files many Kāʻanapali resorts under Lahaina, since they share its address, so check the street before you book. See all stays in Lahaina.
Māʻalaea: condos you can walk from
Māʻalaea has no hotels, only condos along the bay, but you can walk to the boats. Maalaea Banyans has condos on the beach with a shared pool and hot tub, 14 minutes on foot from the harbor and 10 from the Maui Ocean Center; its Expedia listing had only two reviews when we checked, and most Māʻalaea units are rented through vacation-rental sites, so the map shows more than the hotel list does. Harbor parking is paid and towing is enforced, so walking saves a step. Māʻalaea Bay is known for strong afternoon trade winds, which suits a morning sailing. See all stays in Māʻalaea.
Kahului: the closest hotels to the harbor
Kahului is the airport and shopping town, not a resort, and it is the closest place with hotels to Māʻalaea Harbor: about 15 minutes and 8.4 miles, less than from Kīhei. The Kīhei Boat Ramp is about 32 minutes away and Māla Boat Ramp about 45. The north shore is windier and there is no resort beach, but rates are the lowest on this page and you are 5 to 10 minutes from the airport, which makes it the base for a late arrival or an early flight.
Maui Seaside Hotel (mid-range, 8.8 out of 10 from 1,670 Expedia reviews) is on the beach at Kahului Harbor, at 100 West Kaʻahumanu Avenue, with an outdoor pool; it showed $212 a night for the same February night as our three picks, the same as Kohea Kai. Courtyard Maui Kahului Airport (mid-range, 9.2 from 1,001 reviews) has a free 24-hour airport shuttle and an outdoor pool, and showed $404 for that night. See all stays in Kahului.
A morning whale watch on your arrival day is risky after a long flight, and Māʻalaea check-ins run 30 to 45 minutes before departure. If you fly out in the afternoon, a morning trip from Māʻalaea fits well from a Kahului, Kīhei or Wailea room; Kāʻanapali is about 50 minutes from the airport.
Should you split the stay?
Many first-time visitors split a week between West Maui and South Maui, and for whale watching that is the one way to have both a beach-boarding catamaran and the Māʻalaea or Kīhei boats close by. The two sides are about 27 miles and close to an hour apart on Honoapiʻilani Highway. A split is worth it with six nights or more and two boat trips planned. With four nights or fewer, pick one side and drive once: moving hotels costs a morning, and the morning is the slot every whale watch wants. If you do split, stay in West Maui first and finish in Kīhei or Wailea, which are closer to the airport for the flight home.
All six areas on one map
The map opens on Māʻalaea Harbor: Kāʻanapali and Lahaina lie to the west, Kahului to the north-east, Kīhei and Wailea to the south-east. Zoom in on any area to see more places, and pick your dates in the map for live prices.
Booking tips
Book the whale watch first, then the room. Every whale watch on this site shows free cancellation, often up to 24 hours before (check the window on the listing), and the season windows differ: Pacific Whale Foundation sells Māʻalaea trips from 1 November 2026 to 15 April 2027, while Sea Maui runs 15 December to 14 April. Check the meeting point on your voucher, since a “Lahaina” trip may leave from Māla Boat Ramp. If you stay in West Maui and booked a Māʻalaea boat, check HDOT for lane closures the evening before.
You need a car. No whale watch on this site offers hotel pickup, and the departure points are spread along 30 miles of coast. That makes parking part of the room price, and at the resorts a nightly resort fee comes on top of the rate the cards show.
Resort fees and parking, as listed on Expedia
| Hotel | Resort fee per night | Parking per night |
|---|
| Kohea Kai Hotel Maui, Kīhei | None listed | Free, one space per unit |
| Maui Coast Hotel, Kīhei | $46.29 | $20.94 self |
| OUTRIGGER Kāʻanapali Beach Resort | $53.42 | $25 self, $35 valet |
| The Westin Maui, Kāʻanapali | $57.80 | $50 self, $55 valet |
| Hyatt Regency Maui, Kāʻanapali | $62.92 | $50 self, $55 valet |
| Hotel Wailea | $59.36 | $40.50 self or valet |
| Wailea Beach Resort - Marriott | $70.04 | $47 self, $61 valet |
| Andaz Maui at Wailea | $70.04 | $64 valet only |
Read on each listing’s policies section on 25 October 2026; the other hotels on this page were not checked for fees. A $345 night at the OUTRIGGER is about $423 with its fee and self-parking, and a $1,011 night at the Andaz about $1,145 (our arithmetic). Check the fee line on your room before you book.
For the boats themselves, compare them on the homepage table or read the best Maui whale watching tours. The harbor guides cover Māʻalaea, Kāʻanapali, Lahaina and Kīhei, and our review of the Pacific Whale Foundation trip covers the boat most Kīhei stays are closest to. If you would rather watch from land, see whale watching from shore.
When your room is sorted, check whale watch dates and book.
